Ever since the sinking of a South Korean warship in March, tensions on the Korean peninsula have been rising.
North Korea is threatening to use its “nuclear deterrent” in response to joint naval exercises between the U.S. and South Korea, which are due to begin on Sunday.
Eight thousand US and South Korean troops will take part in four days of war games in the waters near nuclear-armed North Korea.
For North and South Korea, which are still officially at war, the stakes of these military exercises are high.
