The Wheel Deal

Fixing you up with life in the fast lane.

What exactly is the Cannonball Run Africa? Is it four days of high-octane debauchery or a really cool way to raise money for the QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA)? Hey, maybe it’s a bit of both. There is only one way to find out and that’s to buy the ticket and take the ride. Well in my case I am not really buying anything because the good people at Jaguar South Africa are sponsoring my entry as well as supplying me with some seriously trick metal. Yep, this year I will be experiencing this unique event behind the wheel of a sleek Jaguar XKR-S – a 404kW GT capable of hitting 100km/h in a mere 4.4-seconds. Flat out it will reach the triple ton. But I won’t be alone. Nope, riding shotgun is my good friend and colleague, Jesse Adams, from The Star Motoring.

So when does it begin? When will Mr. Adams and I hit the road unknown and start tackling the many top-secret challenges that the organisers (cue Round Table and Super Car Lifestyle) have set for us? To tell you the truth, we’re both a bit in the dark at the moment. All we know with any certainty is that it kicks off early tomorrow morning. We don’t have a clue where we’re going or where we’re staying. But maybe, just maybe, we’ll be a little more enlightened after we meet up at Investment Cars, Bryanston, tonight at 18h00 for scrutineering and our very first challenge – decal application. Yeah, as soon as the official briefing session ends we have to apply a variety of different sponsor decals to our XKR-S. If we get them in the same strategic positions as the example car on display, and sans any bubbles, then we’ll be in the points. With our motor racing experience this should be a cakewalk.

But even if it isn’t, we will have plenty opportunity to redeem ourselves over the next four days. So be sure to click back and follow all the frontline action from the 2012 Round Table Cannonball Run Africa. Cannonball Run SA – that sounds amazing… kind of like everyday for me driving home from Sandton to Soweto (you get to join the taxi drivers in ditching the smokies and everything.. lol!)
