Ford, probably the most innovative and forward thinking of America’s big three automakers, is planning to incorporate a special Twitter application into their next generation Sync in-car communication system. Announced by Ford Motor CEO, Alan Mulally, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Thursday, the application known as OpenBreak will pair with your internet enabled mobile phone and allow Tweets to be read out over your car’s audio system as they stream into your account. Now this sounds like a very pertinent app to have if you’re a diehard Twitter fanatic, but surely it’s just another thing to distract you behind the wheel?
No, much more interesting in my opinion is the proposed introduction of other applications like Stitcher and Panadora; internet music services that will give Ford drivers the opportunity to pick up all the benefits and variety of satellite radio from inside their car. Just make sure your phone is up-to-date when these apps finally hit the production lines because they are, at the moment, only compatible with handsets like the iPhone and BlackBerry.
