Say hello to the Renault‘s brand new entry-level rally cars – the Twingo R1 and R2. Built for cash-strapped competitors, both these tenacious little cars come in the form of a special motorsport kit that’s loaded with – tyres excluded of course – all the necessary bits and pieces needed to transform a standard Twingo RS road car into the ultimate budget racer. The cheapest of the two is the R1 that – allowed to compete in most regional, national and international rallies – benefits from the inclusion of a welded roll-cage, a host of required safety equipment and a standard 98kW 1.6 engine tweaked to deliver more torque lower down the rev-range. Building on the R1 package, the R2 gets a more powerful 120kW engine, a five-speed sequential gearbox and a ZF limited-slip differential to help put the power down around tighter corners. In the handling stakes the R2 also benefits from adjustable shock absorbers, high-performance brake pads and one-piece aluminium rims to help reduce unsprung weight. Killer looking on the outside, its stripped-out interior comes with a pair of Sabelt Renaultsport seats and a special LED instrument panel that displays critical information such as oil-pressure, engine temperature, fuel flow etc. Set to go on sale to the public in April 2010, the basic R2 package will set you back R313 767. No price is available for the R1.
