Rally America ace and YouTube gymkhana phenomenon, Ken Block, might be taking his career to the next level by securing a drive in the prestigious World Rally Championship next year. According to reports on Autosport, his management is apparently in the process of brokering a deal that will see Block and ex-Subaru driver, Chris Atkinson, entering the WRC in an all-new Monster Energy Drink World Rally Team Ford Focus. Besides being one of the biggest deals in the history of professional rallying, it will also allow the World Rally Championship to tap into the North American market thanks to Block’s charismatic persona and sizable fan base.
If and when everything is approved and signed off – we’ll know next month – Block and Atkinson will pilot their Monster-backed 2009-spec Focus for exactly half of the WRC rounds in the 2010 season. From then on they’ll be allowed to compete in the entire length of the challenging world rally series. As a self-confessed Block junkie, I really hope that the 41-year-old gets to sling mud with Loeb and the boys; they might very well be surprised by his phenomenal driving talent…
