While Jenson Button tied up the 2009 Formula One World Drivers Championship yesterday, you’ve got to feel for Rubens Barrichello who – after starting the Brazilian GP in pole-position – only managed to cross the finish line in a lowly 8th place. Dogged by bad luck and a car that simply couldn’t match the pace set by the rest of the field, the 37-year-old Brazilian not only missed another opportunity to win in front of his home crowd but, even more frustratingly, was relegated to third in the final world championship standings after Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel finished ahead of him in fourth position. Barrichello, who at one stage in the season looked set to steal the title hopes away from Button, now faces a future of uncertainty as pit-lane rumors suggest that he might be moving to Williams for the 2010 season. Nowhere near as formidable as the mighty Brawn GP outfit and still undecided about what engine their cars will be running next year, it’s probably safe to say that if Rubens does indeed sign a deal with the Grove outfit, his world championship hopes will be significantly reduced. So then you’ve got to ask yourself the biting question: is it actually worth his while wasting time in a team that – at the moment – is nothing more than mid-field filler? Personally, I don’t think so. No, if I was Rubens and couldn’t secure another season with Brawn GP, I’d hang-up my driving gloves and bow out while I still had an otherwise successful season of racing behind my name. After all, as Neil Young once put it, it’s better to burnout quickly than just fade away…
