Volkswagen’s 118kW 1.4TSI engine has just bagged the 2009 Best Green Engine Award. Already riding high after winning the 2009 International Engine Award a few weeks ago, the twincharged 1.4TSI managed to trounce its diesel and hybrid competition thanks to its unrivaled flexibility and impressive performance figures. And while judges were impressed with the unit’s considerable power and torque figures, what really won them over was the 1.4 TSI’s incredible eco-credentials: overall emissions weight in at a mere 144g/km and, more importantly, are backed up by a combined cycle fuel economy figure of just 6.2 litres/100km (45.5mpg). A small capacity engine that utilises both turbo and supercharging to achieve maximum power from minimum fuel, the 1.4TSI is currently available in Volkswagen’s Scirroco, Eos, Tiguan, Passat, Passat CC and the new Golf VI. I recently experienced it in the aforementioned Golf and I was blown away by its spirited and seamless performance. Read that review here.
