It’s been around for 32-years, but which is the best Golf GTI of all-time? Perhaps it’s the original Mk.1 1600 – a model thats brisk performance and nimble handling revolutionised the small car market from the day it was released. Maybe it’s the mighty VR6, a ’90s icon that gave the competition nightmares with its 2.8 six-cylinder engine. Personally, I think it has to be the Mk2 1800 16v. Bestowed with exceptional handling and a free-revving engine that could spend most of the day in its 7200rpm red-line, I believe this model was, and still is, the pinnacle of GTI-ness – understated, affordable and focussed purely on delivering a sports car-like driving experience.

What do you think? What’s your best GTI? Let me know…

My first one!!Although, sadly, I’m still waiting on my ship to come in so I can afford the second. Long live the Right Stuff.

Mine too. Had a gun-metal grey 1.8 16v from 1989. It was such a joy to drive.

I have one but not the GTI, it is my first car and she has been so reliable, I just wish I had the budget for the new one but sadly I will just have to keep playing the lotto

I just got my minter a couple of months ago & I get goosebumps everytime i blip the throttle or take a bend!

It costs peanuts but is tons of fun to drive!

Dude, don’t tell me this – it makes me jealous! I would love to have another 16-valver but they are just so hard to find nowadays. Maybe I’ll import one from the UK? An Oak Green one…:)
