No frills airline Ryanair scored another free publicity coup on Tuesday night after the BBC’s television exposé on the airline backfired.
The Panorama documentary, aimed at examining the love/hate relationship between the airline and its passengers, fell short, viewers said. According to The Times in London, a number of watchers, commenting on blogs and Twitter, asked whether the airline deserved what effectively became a 30-minute prime-time advert.
By yesterday morning, Ryanair had hit back at what it claimed were Panorama’s “lies” by releasing 1.1 million free seats on its website, 100 000 for each alleged falsehood, adding that the TV programme had uncovered “nothing, nada, rien, diddly squat”.
O’Leary stoked the flames further, claiming that the documentary “was more Bananarama than Panorama. The BBC had no case, no facts and no clue. The only benefit it provided to viewers was the 1.1million free seats Ryanair will give away as a result of its false claims.”
O’Leary is a master at turning any publicity, good or bad, to his airline’s advantage.
UPDATE, Wednesday 5.05pm GMT+2: Whether people will actually be able to get free tickets to where they want to go remains to be seen as the comment below seems to attest.

Just bought around 70 flights to different places for 70 cent on my Visa Electron. Put that in your pipe Panorama.
Why Panorama failed to expose Ryanair? This is clear, hidden charges are part of ryanair model, customer service is rubbish but when you paid £5 you know what you can expect no? The only true problem that panorama should have showed is the workers conditions, or pilots pressure, or fact that Ryanair does not recognize worker union, or fact that its subsidiary revenues from public authority are not legal.
How many people are like me and think we should form a Ryanair fan club? All the knockers are just a bunch of jealous, ignorant people who have no idea how to run a business, keep costs down, and more importantly attract FREE publicity. Something must be right with my favourite airline ………. it`s one of the few making a profit.
If a customer doesn`t want to pay the so-called hidden charges (which is rubbish by the way), just go to another airline and give your hard-earned cash to them. I don`t think that it`s been made a law you HAVE to fly with the UK`s best airline.

October 14, 2009 at 4:28 pmI always stood up for Ryanair,… reading here and on his website i see,.. ‘The only benefit it provided to viewers was the 1.1million free seats Ryanair will give away as a result of its false claims’ – I got their mail last night. Flights from Dublin to Biarrtiz FREE Nov until 17th Nov – THERE IS NO SUCH FLIGHT, they are all stopped until next year. I sent an email back to them, it came back with an error. I tried to call them and they direct me to a phone number that I have to pay more. I do not mind this, but Ryanir LIED TOO!!!! Very dissapointed!
