In what seems a desprate attempt to stay relevant and “with it” Esquire have launched their December magazine in Augmented Reality . The AR app gives you; a 3D cover with Robert Downey Jr., a weather-changing fashion portfolio, a time-sensitive Funny Joke from a Beautiful Woman with Community’s Gillian Jacobs, plus a song, a photo sideshow, and a face-recognition ad from Lexus.

It’s kind of cool in a gimmicky 90’s way, when interactive print media was relevant.

Hearst, Esquire’s publisher, would have been better off making a mobile application and driving their readers buying power to physical locations in the real world instead of stuck behind a computer.

Is there an iPhone app to play Esquire over the phone ? I can see millions of Americans trying to do that while they’re driving, thus creating the largest death toll in automotive history…..

Remember when “augmented reality” just meant “Dolly Parton ?”

Hi Mel, you are so right about the Dolly moment.. do you think there is a link between her and the first cloned sheep?

This looks amazing I’m sure it won’t be long until all the magazines are doing it! I’m sure there will be a phone app for it too, iphone already have one for their maps. Have you seen Intel’s Ultra Thin? http://tiny.cc/rDIBw It’s where you can turn a sheet of paper into a laptop! It won’t be long until augmented reality is everywhere!
