Not even the SAMAs are bigger than Generations

By Fifi | 29 February 2012

The country's biggest soapie by far

Rule #1 NEVER mess with Generations’ timeslot at 8pm on SABC 1

Rule #2 NEVER upset the around 6 million viewers of the show

Thankfully SAMAs CEO Randall Abrahams and the folks at MTN (title sponsors for close to a decade now) know this and have moved the awards ceremony to 8.30pm- crucially after Generations on that Monday of April 30.

Said SABC 1 Acting General Manager Leo Manne: “We’ve placed the MTN SAMAs in their rightful prime time viewing slot – just after Generations, SA’s most popular TV programme – giving all South Africans the opportunity to be a part of the most illustrious event on the South African music calendar…”

Remember how the channel refused to move the soapie during the African Cup of Nations, and was willing to only broadcast eight games live and the others delayed? Yup, same applies here. Mfundi Vundla will be smiling somewhere. Wonder how much this show has made him over the years.

The SAMA nominees will be announced on the 8th of next month.

We’ll keep you posted!

VIDEO: Five nominations for ‘newcomers’ Liquideep

By Fifi | 24 April 2011

There was criticism aimed at judges after Liquideep was nominated for Best Newcomer at this years SAMA nominees party. The house duo consisting of Ziyon (singer, songwriter) and Ryzor (DJ, producer) are already household names and performed their hit single Fairytale at last years SAMAs. But Fairytale was released before they released their first full length album Fabrics Of The Heart. The ‘newcomers’ walked away with a total of five nominations in the following categories: Newcomer of the Year; Duo or Group of the Year; Album of the Year; MTN Record of the Year and Best Urban Dance.

Rumour has it: The SA Music Awards will not be held at Sun City

When I received an email at 15:40 on Wednesday that read “Please note the SAMA Nominations Party scheduled for tomorrow night has been moved”, I knew something was up. But Joburg nightlife was on steroids last week Thursday, with 3 big events taking place simultaneously (namely Wonderbra Girl, Playboy launch and Jameson Global Party), so I assumed that it was postponed because the date wasn’t ideal.

But the email was brief, no explanation and no postponement date, just an apology. So my instincts told me to investigate but I was way too busy trying to decide which event to attend first. And now the internet is buzzing with rumours about the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) not taking place in Sun City this year.

According to Music Industry Online MIO rumour has it that the 17th Annual SA Music Awards will be held at Montecasino, Johannesburg. The site also reports that Heineken has pulled out from sponsoring the Awards.

We’re not quite sure how true this is but the Awards are supposed to take place in May and the nominees still haven’t been announced.
