Warm South African welcome for Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue may have tried to slip into South Africa secretly, however the joyous welcome by the Soweto Gospel Choir stopped her completely in her tracks, as she exited the arrivals area at OR Tambo International Airport.

Larger than life on screen, teeny Minogue, 43, who has entertained us for more than the last two decades, wept as she danced and sang with the choir who taught her a few of their trademark moves. Kylie Minogue may have tried to slip into South Africa secretly, however the joyous welcome by the Soweto Gospel Choir stopped her completely in her tracks, as she exited the arrivals area at OR Tambo International Airport.

Vivacious and not looking too tired from her long flight, Minogue was then escorted from the airport building by a swarm of police and security who knocked a few of the bystanders over as they acted a little too over protective.

Minogue is ending her five month 2011 Aphrodite tour in South Africa, where she will be performing three shows at Sun City and the final two at Grand West in Cape Town.

Gig Guide: Tumi And The Volume & Zakes Bantwini at Hush

By Fifi | 9 June 2011

As someone who’s perpetually cold, there are very few events that can get me excited enough to switch off my electric blanket and put on my dancing shoes. MTV Base’s Spanking New VS Brand New gig is one of them. To celebrate their  first year on DSTV compact, MTV Base is taking over club Hush in Rosebank to host one hell of a party.

With headlining performances by Zakes Bantwini and Tumi And The Volume accompanied by DJ’s Vigilante, Kenzhero, Switch, Lulo Cafe, Franky and Spehectacular, I’d describe it as the best of local house and hip-hop .

MTV Base is notorious for throwing epic parties so R100 is a small price to pay.

Last night Canadian-born, South African based neo-soul singer Zaki Ibrahim performed at Analogue Nites in Melrose and I haven’t heard/ read a single bad review. I was at a different event (that’s for another post) but I got to meet her when she performed at the film premier of Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls”.

Zaki’s song “Ansomnia” features in the movie’s soundtrack, alongside music from the likes of Janelle Monae, Nina Simone, Lalah Hathaway, Sharon Jones & The Dap- Kings and Estelle.

After her performance I asked her to tell me a bit about herself and her music:

Uyanda Mbuli vs Gert Johan Coetzee at SA Fashion Week

By Fifi | 11 April 2011

The highly publicized split between business woman Uyanda Mbuli and designer partner Gert Johan Coetzee last year made the two a big attraction at SA Fashion Week. They may not be rivals anymore but celebs, fans and fashionista’s were looking forward to critiquing and comparing their collections.

Diamond Face Couture. Pic:

This year was the 2nd time that Diamond Face Couture, the Fashion label owned by Uyanda Mbuli was showing at SAFW without collaborative partner Gert Johan Coetzee, the man who was believed to be the talent in the partnership.

Uyanda’s show closed closed the opening night of fashion Week and I must be honest, the collection was a trip! There was no cohesive theme that stringed the collection together. The line just seemed obscure.

Her fashion label collaborated with with the sporting retail company Cross Trainer. While I understand how they were trying to create an urban and edgy look this didn’t translate as well on the ramp. Dion Chang described the collection theme on his blog as “corporate secretaries who go out for a binge night (on a school night), and come daybreak, haven’t quite come off the drugs and have to dress hastily for work.”

Gert Johan Coetzee. Pic:

Gert Johan Coetzee. Pics: SANELISIWE MALIZA

Gert Johan Coetzee’s collection was dramatic with Miss South Africa Bokang Montjane and Bonang Matheba as models. Besides the dress modeled by Miss South Africa there was no sign of the signature of the Tutu skirt. While I enjoyed the collection I overheard someone in great disappointment asking for the 20 minutes of her life back.

AUDIO: Zubz The Last Letta is in a strange zone

Southern African rapper, Zubz The Last Letta, real name Ndabaningi Mabuye has been relatively quiet for the past 2 years. Apart from featuring in Pebbles’ new album, Phenomenal he’s been under the radar. I bumped into him at Liz Ogumbo‘s re-launch performance at our offices in Rosebank. I asked him where hes been, what hes been up to and whether hes been working on a new album.
