Have you watched The Wild?

By Fifi | 18 April 2011

You probably read about how the drama began before the soapie made it’s way to your TV screen. Well, I was amongst those who attended the premiere at Montecasino, where M-Net stars walked the red carpet while members of the Creative Workers Union toyi-toyied outside.

But I must admit that the journalist in me was torn between attending the premiere and witnessing the protest. So much so, that I paused to do a head count and scan the demonstrators when I was driving into Monte. I spotted Tony Kgoroge and an entourage of about 20 people; Hlomla Dandala was one of them.

The amount of people that were gathered at the Montecasino Nu Metro premiere exceeded that of the people who were picketing outside.

Flashing camera’s and screaming fans greeted the cast of The Wild as they strolled down the red carpet. Every cast member paused when they got to Elana Afrika who was conducting live interviews, which were screened inside the venue.

M-Net had a long list of sponsors that included designers Suzaan Heyns, Gert Johan Coetzee, David Tlale and Carlton Hair Salon, so the actresses were dressed up.  But that doesn’t mean they were dressed well. The outfits that were designed for them didn’t suit their personalities or flatter their bodies.

I was especially disappointed with the outfit David Tlale created for Idols contestant-come-actress Gail Nkoane. But the ugly dress didn’t distract us from her beauty. Elana Afrika described her as “the girl from Idols who looks like Halle Berry”

Tony Kgoroge’s replacement, Putla Sehlapelo didn’t let the controversy surrounding his employment reflect. I tried to squeeze it into our conversation but he just focused on the strengths of the soap and we interrupted by a frantic fan.

Champagne and canapés were in abundance. And guests helped themselves until they were ushered into the theater. The show officially began when local power couple, Connie & Shona Ferguson arrived. They both act in the soap, and they co-hosted the premiere together.

Four episodes of The Wild were screened and the cast was also watching them for the first time. The soap is shot in HD and filmed entirely on location, on various sites, in a manner similar to South American telenovelas. The main backdrop to the story is a stretch of land that is home to a five-star game lodge.

M-Net describes it as “a story revolves around three families – the Lebones, the van Reenens and the Tladis. These families struggle to negotiate a cohesive future, but they are bound together because of their relationship to a special piece of land”

If you haven’t watched it yet, then you can expect to see some wild animals, feuds, family struggles and love affairs. It took me two episodes to warm up to it and I was hooked by the fourth.

Latino beauty, Jenifer Lopez has been named People Magazine’s most beautiful woman in the world. The 41-year-old New York City-born singer, actress and current “American Idol” judge, joined former winners Halle Berry, Jennifer Garner and Beyonce Knowles to top the magazine annual list of the world’s most beautiful people.

83rd Academy Awards: highlights & lowlights

The biggest night in Hollywood has come and gone. The 83rd Academy Awards are over. The awards were hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco and opened with a video montage featuring clips from this year’s nominated movies.

The two hosts began the ceremony by joking about their age. James said “Anne, I must say you look so beautiful, and so hip.” Anne responded “Thank you, James, you look very appealing to a younger demographic yourself.”

But the The former Disney Darling and  Hollywood heartthrob didn’t feel so young and hip. Their humour was dry, their presenting was amateurish and the awards lacked entertainment. I was actually disappointed when I realised that they were presenting the entire show. I suppose the witty Ricky Gervais (presented the Golden Globes) and last years Oscar  host, the charming Hugh Jackman are to blame.

But the ceremony had it’s highlights and WTF moments like Melissa Leo swearing in her speech, James Franco appearing on stage in drag and Aaron Sorkin (writer of The Social Network) talking over his cut off time.

As for presenters there were quite a few A-listers: Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges presented to their peers. Oprah Winfrey announced the Best Documentary award and Justin Timberlake joked about being graffiti artist Banksy as he presented an award.

Overall the awards ceremony wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible either.

2011 Academy Awards red carpet fashion

By Fifi | 28 February 2011

All eyes were on Hollywood stars as they walked the biggest red carpet of the awards season. The first star to arrive was Jennifer Lawrence who wore a silhouette hugging dress by Calvin Klein.

Before she could slip into the Kodak Theatre she stopped to chat with Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic on E!’s Live From The Red Carpet and gave one of the strangest quotes of the night

“I had to learn how to chop wood and handle a gun and hit squirrels. I had to learn from a hunter. But, yeah, I’ve been off squirrel ever since.” said Jennifer Lawrence, when asked about how she prepared for her role in Winter’s Bone.

Back to fashion, bare shoulders were in abundance as most stars wore sleeveless, off the shoulder or spaghetti straps. Shades of red and orange also made an appearance on the carpet with co- host Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansen and Jennifer Hudson donning the hue.

Hudson has recently lost 40 pounds and couldn’t stop gushing about her form fitting gown “Oh my God, I can’t sleep at night! When I first tried on my dress it was like two, three nights ago, and I’m like, ‘OK, I don’t want to sleep. I don’t want to take it off!’” she said to Ryan Seacrest.

Helena Bonham Carter, who is a constant worst dressed nominee wore a lace gown made by a costume designer ” I felt it would be better to celebrate movies rather than fashion”. Even though she was the only star to wear a ‘costume’ to the awards, she wasn’t the only one in black. Sharon Stone, Maris Tomel and Busy Phillips also wore black gowns.

Other trends included shades of gold, silver and taupe, mermaid tails, lace and sparkles.

It looks like the party was in Cape Town on Thursday, not just for the politicians who paraded at parliament but for international stars as well. Oscar award winning actor, Denzel Washington was spotted outside the Sugarhut Club in Cape Town. And we briefly spotted him at the lobby of the One and Only in the V&A Waterfront.

It is reported that he is in the country to film a movie with Ryan Renolds (Scarlett Johansson’s ex), called Safe House.

The Mother City has a reputation for featuring in Hollywood movies. Last year Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez were in town to film Dark Tide.

Ryan hasn’t been spotted yet but he’s been in the Cape since February 2. He and Denzel will be shooting at a plush 5 star hotel in the Cape Peninsula.Filmcontact.com also reported that Oliver Hagan, a Sea Point resident tweeted that the film’s opening scenes will be shot at his former flat.
