Not even the SAMAs are bigger than Generations

By Fifi | 29 February 2012

The country's biggest soapie by far

Rule #1 NEVER mess with Generations’ timeslot at 8pm on SABC 1

Rule #2 NEVER upset the around 6 million viewers of the show

Thankfully SAMAs CEO Randall Abrahams and the folks at MTN (title sponsors for close to a decade now) know this and have moved the awards ceremony to 8.30pm- crucially after Generations on that Monday of April 30.

Said SABC 1 Acting General Manager Leo Manne: “We’ve placed the MTN SAMAs in their rightful prime time viewing slot – just after Generations, SA’s most popular TV programme – giving all South Africans the opportunity to be a part of the most illustrious event on the South African music calendar…”

Remember how the channel refused to move the soapie during the African Cup of Nations, and was willing to only broadcast eight games live and the others delayed? Yup, same applies here. Mfundi Vundla will be smiling somewhere. Wonder how much this show has made him over the years.

The SAMA nominees will be announced on the 8th of next month.

We’ll keep you posted!

Akhumzi Jezile’s 23rd shinding

By Fifi | 7 February 2012

Musa leads the off-key singing at dinner. We're not sure what Miza is using the cutlery for

Isn’t it amazing how quickly they grow? YoTV’s presenter Akhumzi Jezile hosted his celebrity friends -and The Social, among select media- to a weekend away at Sun City in the North West, this past weekend- something that’s becoming a norm in the industry.

Birthday boy Akhumzi during an interview with Vuzu.Tv

Close pals including Musa Mthombeni, Samkelo Ndlovu, DJs Nutty Nys and Miza, Boity Thulo, former Generations actress Kagiso Rakosa, Selimathunzi presenter Lunga Shabalala and even current Miss SA Teen Celeste Khumalo all arrived on Friday afternoon and only began preparing to leave the resort on Sunday afternoon.

Nutty Nys had a little more fun than his expression suggests

All manner of misbehaviour ensued, but poor ol’ Akhumzi still has a little longer with the popular Sabc 1 programme, so we won’t reveal too many details about what was said or consumed during the entire weekend.

The innocent-looking Lunga sat next to the sweet Celeste. Would they be cute together? We're not starting rumours!

We’re certain Mzansi Magic’s Headline -yes Trevor Gumbi and the roving camera and mic was also there-, Vuzu or Selimathunzi will air some of the funny footage.

After terrorising all and sundry, Trevor Gumbi eventually managed a smile at dinner

We will say this though; even though The Social had fun, we were rather disappointed there was no cake!

The naughty Samkelo Ndlovu flirting with us

Happy Birthday, dude!

These two weren't shy to poke fun at each others abdominal girths

VIDEO: Catching up with Rosie Motene

Rosie Motene is a veteran actress who was introduced to most South Africans when she played the role of Tebogo Motene on Generations. But she is also known for hosting Studio 53 and the role she played as the official spokesperson for the Vagina Monologues benefit concert. I crossed paths with her at the Nine West store at The Zone in Rosebank. We talked about shoes and I found out what she’s up to.

Actor Jafta Mamabolo & Generations Camera Operator, Phil

Jafta Mamabolo has been working in film, television and radio for several years. His early work includes presenting on Craze, Yo TV and The Molo Show but he is best known for his role in the feature film, Jerusalema. Last week I caught up with him at the Patron Silver Party and asked him what it’s like to be acting in country’s biggest soapie, Generations. P.S. wait for the video to buffer after you’ve pressed play now.

Did you watch Nonhle goes to Hollywood?

The much anticipated pilot of Nonhle goes to Hollywood premiered on Vuzu. Despite being a trending topic in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, the show received mixed reactions, if tweets and blogs are anything to go by.

Having watched so many international reality shows like Keeping up with the Kardashians, The Hills and Kimora: Life in the fab lane; their target market knows that storylines are scripted. But there was too much acting on Nohle’s show. The scenes dragged on for way too long and it was way too dramatic. There was too much acting and not enough reality. We all know that Nonhle IS going to Hollywood, but on last nights episode she still hadn’t ‘decided’ if she is going and her bags still haven’t been packed.

We were also disappointed at how poor the production was. The sound was terrible: there were times when the background music was louder than the dialogue. Some of the camera angles were questionable. Why didn’t they edit her cars number plates and why did they zoom in on Nonhle’s publicists cellphone number? On the plus side, we didn’t know reality tv was so educational… there is such a thing as Venezuelan weaves?

This is what some tweeters said about the show:

@MissAlichi said: Watched the premiere of #NGTH (Nonhle Goes to Hollywood) with @NonhleThema tonite…..Looove it! So proud of my girl!!♥

@Youla302ec said: Big fail for me @MbauReloaded (Khanyi Mbau) should please give us a REAL reality show, unscripted! First she sold us relaxers when she had a weave, now this!

@pimpassdaddy said: Judging by the tweets, I think #NGTH is gonna be the new show to diss! Ayeye #generations

We agree with @pimpassdaddy who said: “Judging by the tweets, I think #NGTH is gonna be the new show to diss! Ayeye #generations”.

The show is definately a “Youth markets Generations”. You know how we complain about the soapie being  bad but still tune in religiously, even if its to mock and criticise it.

P.S. Did you watch it? What are your first impressions?
