Kenny Kunene takes on Sunday World

By Fifi | 1 December 2011

The story in the Sunday World that has angered the "Sushi King"

I love gossip rags. I thought I’d make that clear. They’re trashy, dramatic, fun and cheeky as hell. Basically, they’re just like me.

One thing that tabloids are constantly accused of is, to put it nicely (and Biblically, if that’s a word), spreading falsehoods. ‘Lies, lies, lies!’ yell the accused celebrities (A-grade, F-grade: what’s the diff? If you’ve been in the paper once or been an extra on Generations, you now qualify as some sort of famous, celebrated person).

But one guy who is a celebrity (simply because he throws good parties) is Kenny Kunene. I mean, the man’s not richer than Patrice Motsepe or Cyril Ramaphosa (does Mr Cyril have a son I can marry? I’m thinking one-carat white-gold Cartier engagement ring). But Kenny is, dare I say it, “controversial”. Why? Because tabloids said so.

Anyway, the man appears in papers A LOT. I guess he wouldn’t be gracing their pages if he wasn’t a big seller, right? So he was in the Sunday World this week, in an OTT story about how his wife Mathato is divorcing him cos she’s tired of his philandering, his adultery, his fornication, his sex life that doesn’t include her. Tog.

Kenny, as much as he LOVES publicity (he has a reality show, don’t forget), was not impressed. So unimpressed was he, he took to his blog to get a few things off his sushi-eating, Porsche-driving chest and to set some things straight.

In a nutshell, he yelled: “Lies!” and then went on to threaten to take Sunday World to court unless they print a front-page, bold-as-gold retraction in next week’s paper. No one “f***s” with his family, he says. Oooh la la!

Let’s wait and see, shall we. Will Sunday World quiver in their boots and take things back? Or will King Kenny whisk them off to court (he’s been there before, obviously, being a former prisoner and all), and will it play out like the episode in Pink Floyd’s The Trial? Will the tabloid be hanged by its nuts or will Kenny be too busy partying to remember that he was going to take them to court?

D-R-A-M-A, drama!

Is Lindsay Lohan really that broke?

Rumour is that Lindsay Lohan, Tinseltown’s resident wild child, is taking on a new role: Playboy Playmate.

This would make perfect sense since the “recovered” addict is allegedly going for broke, despite once commanding about $7 million per film. But that was back when she WAS in films. Nowadays the actress can’t even land a supporting role in a television advert, apparently.

Gossip encylopaedia TMZ reports that LiLo (as she’s often called by the gossips) posed for the Hef’s mag this weekend and was paid about $1 million. Not bad for a (not-so-former) jailbird. Just last week the girl left court in handcuffs at her probation hearing after the judge revoked her probation which she’d violated.

At least she had a nice dress on. Even Joan Rivers thought so.

But while she’s keeping her clothes off, maybe Lindsay should consider becoming a permanent fixture in Hef’s life – as his newest girlfriend, perhaps? She could even have a reality show while she’s at it: ‘Lindsay of the Playboy Mansion’. I guess she would be indulging in another kind of blow.

Oh no, I didn’t just say that. Curse my filthy mouth.

Taboo party vs AKA album launch

By Fifi | 10 October 2011

Taboo held its eighth birthday party on Saturday night and my friend and I were so excited and dressed to the nines (I mean she had on killer heels that you couldn’t even walk in, she meant serious business); but the night was disappointing.

Their attempts at a ‘fabulous’ party included ‘free’ glasses of Patron tequila (with the boredom we endured, trust me we paid for that free booze), wanna-be celebs (a bunch of kids’ TV presenters and former kids’ TV presenters) as well as a dodgy performance from Louise Carver (I love the lady, but Saturday night she was just not rocking it).

Taboo tried to entice us with a performance later in the night from Pixie Bennett (all I know abut her is that she was one of the top ten idols on THAT scandalous Idols season where they had two winners) and all I could think was: really Taboo, really?

The only real celebs who were there included socialite Uyanda Mbuli, and she was there for such a short time I felt like I had imagined her appearance, and Jennifer Su, but she too was gone in matter of minutes.

Now, I’m not saying that celebs are the only thing that matter at such a party, but the music sucked: it had yawn-like tendencies and that’s never a good thing; and the snacks that were circulating: not tasty at all. The vibe was not great and my friend and I actually found the tweets from the Coldplay concert a lot more entertaining than the party. And tweetland proved to be our saving grace because we were reminded that AKA was launching his album down the road at Icon. So, we decided to ditch Taboo, and head over to Icon: and it was the best decision that we made that night.

So on to better things we went…

After attending the AKA launch at Icon on Saturday I have come to the conclusion that the boy has some serious fans. I mean the kind of fans who know every word and beat of the song and there was one guy who was sweating so much from rapping along with AKA you would have sworn he was the one performing.

And the girls were not shy in shaking their booties like they had watched way too many Beyonce videos and were now auditioning for Laurie-Ann Gibson (if you don’t know her, she’s a super choreographer with her own E! entertainment reality show) and to steal one of her signature phrases: those girls were ‘going full out till their knuckles bled’. My friend and I felt seriously out of place with our elementary hip-hop moves and not belonging to a dance crew.

The crowd was pumped up, the music was hot and the atmosphere was incredible. And this party did have a few celebs that were worth noting: AKA was there, obviously, looking scrumptious, Bongani Fassie made an appearance, one of the Twinz also came through (not sure which one), Thapelo Mokoena (he’s now known as the ‘china’ in the Hunter’s ad, but I’ll never forget his performance as Karabo’s bodyguard on Generations) was also there in a beige hat that really just looked awkward and very short twitter celebrity Khaya Dlanga also dropped in.

All in all: a pretty great time.

Khanyi, Kelly and KFC

By Fifi | 6 September 2011

Has anyone seen the new KFC ad starring Khanyi Mbau and Kelly Khumalo? Like the previous ad with goalies for rival teams Moeneeb Josephs and Itumeleng Khune, the two are “united” in their love for KFC. Hmmm…

For those who don’t know, Khanyi and Kelly have been sparring in gossip rags for a while now. Kelly even bliksemed Khanyi in a Rosebank salon once. And now, lo and behold, the two are in an advert sharing a new meal that has pap in it (only black girls eat pap, KFC?).

We wonder just how much the two were paid to not only be in the same room together, but to fake a friendly conversation. Imagine how dramatic the shoot must have been – we would have loved to be the gaffer at that filming. Actually, do the two REALLY detest each other or have they just been putting on a show for some paragraphs in a story and insets on a gossip show?

Either way, KFC is cashing in on this – and so are Kelly and Khanyi, although their love/hate relationship is so 2010.

So, KFC, who will star in your next ad? Dineo Ranaka and Nonhle Thema? Wouldn’t THAT be juicy?

Yesterday Tropika held a launch party at the sun deck of the Sandton Sun Hotel (not cool in this weather!) where they announced the 7 celebrities that have been selected to compete in the 4th season of Tropika Island of Treasure.

Models Joelle Kayembe and Tracy McGregor, 5FM’s Poppy Ntshongwana, comedian Tshepo Mogale, singer/ TV personality Phila Mazibuko, DJ Zinhle and rapper Siyabinga ‘Slikour’ Metane are the seven celebs that will be jet setting to Cancun in Mexico for 2 weeks. They will be joined by seven plebs and they’ll all have to compete for the R1million prize.

Mechanical bulls, tropical cocktails and pinata’s stuffed with sweets and money distracted the guests from complaining about being on a sun deck in this icy weather.

Phila Mazibuko was unfashionably late and Joelle Kayembe just didn’t pitch.

After the count of an overwhelming 122 million votes, Ryan Seacrest announced that 17-year-old Scotty McCreery was the winner of American Idol.

McCreery, the fourth male to win the title in 10 seasons, beat runner up contestant 16-year-old Lauren Alaina in the two hour season finale, that was hosted at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night.

Commenting on if he thought he would win, McCreery said: “It’s been a year since Lauren and I tried out.  We’ve been together since day one and we’re going to stay together. Never in my wildest dreams…I’ve got to thank the Lord first, he got me here.”

McCreery will receive a recording contract with Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group and joins his predecessors who held the prestigious American Idol title such as Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Taylor Hicks, Reuben Studdard, David Cook, Kris Allen, Fantasia Barrino, Lee DeWyze and Carrie Underwood.

Is Nonhle Thema jealous of Bonang Matheba’s Reality Show?

Bonang changed into another outfit after the speeches and formalities

FHM dubbed Bonang Matheba “SA’s Queen Of All Media” and I can’t think of a better description.  The 23 year old is a TV and radio personality; owns a handbag label, has her own website and she’s an ambassador for several products (to name a few: she has a Diva Divine weave named after her, drives a sponsored Peugeot and is the face of Gert Johan Coetzee’s fashion label).

She’s a dominant figure in the entertainment industry and now she’s determined to conquer online media.

Last week Bonang held an intimate party where she celebrated her FHM cover and announced her latest venture: her own reality show. The show is billed as an inside look into her busy life and every week a 15 minute episode will be aired on her website.

But viewers got their first glimpse of Bonang’s lifestyle when she was featured in the debut episode of VUZU TV’s new lifestyle reality show, Top Shayela. Twitter was buzzing the night it was screened as fans watched in awe and admiration.

But amidst the rave reviews, there were Nonhle Thema‘s passive aggressive to arrogant tweets about other entertainers trying to copy her reality show ‘swag’.

Nonhle was the first South African to receive her own Reality Show “Nonhle Goes To Hollywood” but the show was discontinued after it received negative response. Her questionable tweets have spurred rumours that she might be jealous of Bonang’s popularity and success.

Here are some more pictures from Bonang’s B*Dazzled party:

The artist formerly known as JLo is back with On The Floor, the single from her upcoming album, Love?.

Since her last album, Jennifer has become a mom and stayed out of the limelight. Well now she’s back in the spotlight, by being the only female judge on the reality TV show, American Idol.

She used this platform to debut her new video, where she collaborates with Pitbull. The song is up-tempo with a strong Latin influence.
