No one goes to the cinema to check out cool fashion. I mean, it’s dark and the floor is littered with popcorn (I will never understand why people eat it – it serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever, in my opinion).
I could swear that some people, though, go to the cinema for the sole purpose of making out and texting. And laughing much too loudly.
But this weekend, a movie house will be used for a more enlightening purpose than watching car chases, explosions and boobs beneath a sheer nightgown. The Ster Kinekor at the Zone in Rosebank will play host to a fashion show. That’s right, lovelies – clothes, a runway and leggy models in a cinema. Enticing.
Hosted by Studio 05 School of Fashion, the event will showcase the works of its students and is part of their graduation process. I don’t know about you, but my graduation featured people dressed like office workers with nasty black gowns draped over them. Yuck.
The Studio 05 show is in collaboration with ELLE magazine (joy!), MTV Base and Woolworths, amongst others.
Why not hit the movies on Saturday for a live show? I’m game. I hear even the Real Goboza crew will be there (“Look mom, I’m on TV!”)
Tickets are R100 and are available from Studio 05. Check them out on Facebook or visit their website for more info.
The talented (and visually-appealling) Mr Johnny Depp, who stopped ageing at 30, is in a bit of trouble…
And no, he hasn’t been getting kicked out of hotels and attacking photographers like back in his wild-child days. No, no. Johnny Depp said in an interview with Vanity Fair, for their November issue, that being in a photo shoot is like being raped.
That’s right. He compared posing for photos to being violated sexually. For such a smart man, Johnny was sure being insensitive and dumb.
He’s not the first celebrity to make this blunder – Twilight actress Kristen Stewart made a similar comment in 2010 when talking about being stalked by the paparazzi. And while we imagine that being hounded by photographers and posing for a camera when you don’t want to can’t be much fun, we’re pretty sure that to compare such to rape is just being ridiculous.
Celebrities and their non-problems. Their publicists must train them to bite their tongues at times, because some people have real problems.
The premiere for the film How to steal 2 million was a real Generations affair. Held at Killarney mall the event was well attended. The movie directed by Charlie Mvundla is produced under father, Mfundi Mvundla’s production company. So obviously it was filled with Generations actors past and present from Akin Omotoso to Thami Mngqolo who plays Senzo on the soapie. The theme for the premiere was black and bling yet not even the cast and director followed it.Hlubi Mboya looked beautiful in a white dress. Our own little Hollywood starlet Terry Pheto was also there, she plays Olive in the film. Everyone was in jovial spirits which was probably because of the Patron that was on offer for guests. All in all it was a good night, the movie wasn’t horrible.

2010/2011 hasn’t been kind to Megan Fox. First she was replaced by Rosie-Huntington-Whiteley in the new Transformers movie and now Rihanna is taking her place as the new face (and body) of Armani’s autumn/winter underwear and jeans campaign.
Rihana got the rumour mills running before it was announced when she tweeted: “U would NEVER guess what I’m doing right now!!! Hint Hint #Armani”. But today it was made official. The curvaceous Barbadian beauty will star in the Armani campaigns this autumn.
Judging by her on stage antics, Riri will fill Megan’s pants with ease. In a recent Vogue cover spread Rhianna said ”I realized that I actually like my body, I just feel sexy. For the first time, I don’t want to get rid of the curves. My body is comfortable, and it’s not unhealthy, so I’m going to rock with it.”
According to Forbes magazine, Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker were the highest-earning actresses last year, with bankrolls that topped $30 million each.
Most of Jolie’s cash came from the worldwide success of her thriller “Salt,” which made $300 million, and “The Tourist,” which raked in $280 million, despite some bad reviews.
In an interview with MTV, Forbes’ Dorothy Pomerantz said “”People may be surprised to see Sarah Jessica Parker up there but they may not realize that in addition to acting, she earns big from her perfumes and endorsement deals. She earned $18 million in 2010 from her successful perfume line alone”
But the bulk of Parker’s earnings came from her payments for reruns of her TV series “Sex and the City,” on which she is a producer and additional payments from the second “Sex And The City ” film, which took $290 million in international box office.
Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are just behind the top earners; they each took home an estimated $28 million. Other actresses that made the list include Julia Roberts ($20 million), “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart ($20 million), Katherine Heigl ($19 million), Cameron Diaz ($18 million), Sandra Bullock ($15 million) and Meryl Streep ($10 million).
Transformers star, Shia LaBeouf claims that he slept with his former Transformers co-star Megan Fox.
details. com reports that LaBeouf gave an affirmative nod when he was asked about sleeping with Megan Fox and he is quoted saying “Look, you’re on the set for six months, with someone who’s rooting to be attracted to you, and you’re rooting to be attracted to them,” and adds “I never understood the separation of work and life in that situation. But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry onscreen.”
I don’t know whether LaBeouf is telling the truth but I don’t think he’s stupid enough to lie, especially to a reporter. One thing is certain though, boys who kiss and tell aren’t sexy!
The 64th edition of the Cannes film festival gets underway today with up-and-coming directors and Hollywood A-listers rubbing shoulders at the world’s biggest cinema gathering.
Woody Allen’s latest romantic comedy “Midnight in Paris” opens the 11-day event on the French Riviera at a black-tie evening screening that already has tongues wagging.
Billed by organisers as “a love letter” to the French capital, it stars Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates and Marion Cotillard, but all eyes have been on French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, cast by Allen in a bit part as a museum curator. However the supermodel-turned-singer has said that she is skipping the screening for “personal and professional reasons” — only stirring rumours that she is pregnant with President Nicolas Sarkozy’s child.
Other Hollywood stars that will be converging on Cannes include the likes of Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz; appearing in the 3-D adventure caper “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”
Oscar-winner Robert De Niro, who starred in past Palme d’Or winners “Taxi Driver” and “The Mission”, is steering the jury that includes Hollywood stars Uma Thurman and Jude Law, Hong Kong director Johnny To and film producer Shi Nansun, and French director Olivier Assayas.
The biggest night in Hollywood has come and gone. The 83rd Academy Awards are over. The awards were hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco and opened with a video montage featuring clips from this year’s nominated movies.
The two hosts began the ceremony by joking about their age. James said “Anne, I must say you look so beautiful, and so hip.” Anne responded “Thank you, James, you look very appealing to a younger demographic yourself.”
But the The former Disney Darling and Hollywood heartthrob didn’t feel so young and hip. Their humour was dry, their presenting was amateurish and the awards lacked entertainment. I was actually disappointed when I realised that they were presenting the entire show. I suppose the witty Ricky Gervais (presented the Golden Globes) and last years Oscar host, the charming Hugh Jackman are to blame.
But the ceremony had it’s highlights and WTF moments like Melissa Leo swearing in her speech, James Franco appearing on stage in drag and Aaron Sorkin (writer of The Social Network) talking over his cut off time.
As for presenters there were quite a few A-listers: Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges presented to their peers. Oprah Winfrey announced the Best Documentary award and Justin Timberlake joked about being graffiti artist Banksy as he presented an award.
Overall the awards ceremony wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible either.
