All the girls love this man – Stone from Bongo Maffin – There was a palpable exhalation of air in the room when he passed by – it helps that he has that whole star thing wrapped up sartorially speaking. I loved his aviators – help I am getting caught up in a terrible sunglass crisis!

The six finalists of the Mr Price – Elle New Talent Awards will open the Sanlam SA Fashion Week’s Spring/ Summer Collections 2008/2009 on Wednesday, 27 August. Each finalist will showcase six of their designs based on the theme of “New Romance”.
The finalists are Marize Malan, Robyn de Klerk, Tanya Demby, Anisa Ami Mpungwe, Stephan Marin and Khumo Mashimane – watch these names , previous winners of the competition include David Tlale and Tiaan Nagel so its a really great stepping stone for a great career in fashion.
I loved the play on volume on these sketches by Anisa Ami Mpungwe – if you want to see all the portfolios link through to i fashion - ( How brilliant is this website?)
BTW – we are going to be doing fantastic things on The Frock Report for SA Fashion Week – guest bloggers will be providing blow by blow accounts of everything – very exciting – watch this space..
In the interim just have to throw in some New Romantics in the form of Visage’s Fade to Grey – priceless 80′s new romance ….

I am about to fly off to the northern climes on Friday for a bit of sea and sun – so am in the market for a new pair of sunnies –
The classic Rayban Wayfarer is having its moment in the sun again (could not resist that)
But should I get a pair, or is it just another 80′s moment I should let quietly slip by like legwarmers, bubble skirts and leggings ?

I think it was Thomas Jefferson that said every man has two nations – his own and France – watch this brilliantly amusing short film Je t’aime John Wayne and you will see the truth in that statement – Kris Marshall is the hysterically romantic hero.
But the mood of it also reminded me of the Paul Smith Winter 08 catalogue which features a moody young man in a bleak but romantisiced London background – Shoreditch perhaps…

I found this little pic of Ms Sharon Becker Fashion Editor at Elle mag and Andrew Chandler, I had forgotten about it , I love Sharon’s vintage dress and her perfect little pair of Marc Jacobs heels and Andrew’s perfect yellow sweat shirt. Speaking of Elle – I will do something on the Elle New Talent competition on the morrow so look out for it in build up to SA Fashion Week.

The inimitable Ms Kate Moss is on yet another Vogue cover – this time for the August ‘Ageless’ issue – here are a few stills from the shoot.
I am always rather conflicted with these representations of age. We are a society obsessed with youthfulness – Moss at 34 is quoted as saying “I am still acting like a seventeen-year-old, I definitely haven’t become middle-aged. I’ve got a house and a daughter and all that, but I still like to have fun. Even in my business we still have fun.” And the oldest person in the edition Roberta McCain – US presidential hopeful John McCain’s mother said “Honey, I’ve had a dream life, and it was all luck, I’m glad my mother’s not around because I still don’t plan ahead or think things out. Mother told me once, ‘If the gardener asked you to go to Chinatown with him, you’d go.’ And I thought, Well, of course I would.”
So it seems that in order to age fashionably one should maintain eternal youth – one way or another – its a bit disingenuous.

If we cannot aspire to Kate’s ageless mindset and appearance – perhaps we can step into her boots – a first for SA the french brand of Wellies – Le Chameau is now available locally. Here is Kate sporting festival chic and Le Chameau’s in happier days with the bad boy of rock Pete Doherty – email – homage@mweb.co.za – for more info

So I was reading the South African street style blog and they raised a question that we have discussed peripherally before here on the frock report – in relation to Zara.
The blogger was concerned that international labels don’t pay attention to the fact that we are operating in a different season here in the Southern hemisphere so they run adverts that are clearly directed at the northern hemisphere. Hence the ad that ran in the August and September edition of Elle: The Burberry autumn/ winter campaign featuring the delicious Sam Riley (who played Ian Curtis in last year’s Anton Corbijn film Control) and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The couple were shot by Mario Testino in black and white with more than a hint of nostalgia . The Creative director of Burberry Christopher Bailey said the campaign captures the poetic melancholy and romance of the winter collections.
So here is my take on this: I hate to be treated differently just because I am in the Southern hemisphere – call this a throwback to being heavily isolated during apartheid. Read More…

I think the lovely Ms Imani Coppola one half of the duo Little Jackie, along with DJ/programmer Adam Pallin is brilliant – certainly flavour of my Sunday….
Not often am I so amused by a song, watch Black Barbie and see how many papped starlets being spoofed you can count?
Last month in the New York Times, Jon Pareles reviewed Little Jackie’s debut album, The Stoop and said ” Little Jackie “uses lush, lilting 1960s soul samples and buoyant nonsense-syllable choruses to back up her insouciant, articulate takes on relationships in various stages of disaster, Her songwriting is modern and quick-tongued, as she casually glides between sassy singing and melodic rapping. She handles syllables, rhymes and ideas far more skillfully than her liaisons.”
And just for good measure listen to this little number :
The world should revolve around me
