Harry Potter star Emma Watson is set to take a break from her Browns University studies to focus on a demanding career. In addition to resuming promotional duties for the final installment in the Harry Potter franschise, Watson is collaborating with designer Alberta Ferreti on an eco-friendly fashion line called Pure Threads. Writing on her website where she also announced her break from studying, the 20 year old says ‘I believe this is a big step forward for all of the international fashion industry, but also an important step for an increased sensitivity to the problem of ecology.’

Long Live the Arctic

By Aspasia Karras | 13 November 2009

My editor was watching a TED talk that demonstrated through time lapse photography the devastating and real effects of global warming on glaciers around the world – scary stuff. The guy giving the talk concludes however that there is still time to do the right thing and save the planet. I agree. We could do nothing better than shop at this delicious new eco/vintage friendly online store called KIND Boutique. Although not from SA (I presume) flying that delectable stuff about is no good. Perhaps they can send the goodies per ship. I adore the graphics ( see above) for KIND designed by Jackie Bos a Brooklyn based graphic designer, who has also produced a delightful mini book called I Heart the Arctic - me too dear Jackie – me too, and long may it last.

A delight in found objects

All the luck in the world, is a charming Dutch shop started by Jane Schouten to recycle old things into ever more lovely new things. How perfectly nice. And since all our senses are being assaulted by the pre Christmas mania plastered all over the shopping malls, I thought we should look at Jane’s 2008 Christmas tree and pause and smile and hope for the best.

Let’s Carrotmob I say

By Aspasia Karras | 21 October 2009

Carrotmob Makes It Rain from carrotmob on Vimeo.

I have just been reading about Carrotmob. So, so super clever. ” Carrotmob is a method of activism that leverages consumer power to make the most socially-responsible business practices also the most profitable choices. Businesses compete with one another to see who can do the most good, and then a big mob of consumers buys products in order to reward whichever business made the strongest commitment to improve the world. It’s the opposite of a boycott.

It’s easier to understand if you look at an example. In the first ever Carrotmob event, a liquor store agreed to invest in upgrades that made their store more energy-efficient. In exchange, hundreds of Carrotmobbers showed up at once to support the winning liquor store. This is a video of that campaign, and the mayhem that ensued…”

Works for me – shopping and greening in one fell swoop. We could do with a little of that here I say.

Gaga be damned but McQueen delights

By Aspasia Karras | 8 October 2009

Jessica Olin of the London Review of books had this to say about McQueen’s take on the dire future of the environment …
“But if the coming environmental meltdown involves black leather gladiator skirts, peacock-eye prints and softly gleaming seaweed-green silk harem pants, I’m all for it, whited-out eyebrows be damned.”
She was a little less gushing about Lady Gaga’s performance.

DYI girl

Laurice Taitz Ms Nothing to do in Joburg besides…. sent me this wonderful link this morning. This lass has started the MakeShift project. She is making every item of clothing she wears everyday. Think about it she has to manufacture her own shoes, bags and even sunglasses – eish! It is a brilliant exercise in sustainable design though and I am certainly inspired although I cannot even sew on a button.

Eco stylin shoes

By Aspasia Karras | 21 September 2009

Cute right?
Even better is that these little pumps are eco friendly – they are from green but super stylish shoe manufacturers Terra Plana - I spotted them in a pop up shop in New York and delighted in the whole concept – of the pop up shop and the shoes.
“Tread gently – Think on your feet” is their tag line – I like.
