The Frock Report

Dispatches from the front row of fashion and style…

French designer, Fred Sathal showed an impressive collection of star-spangled dresses, jackets and tops last night at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa. The audience was swept away by the detail of hundreds of sequins, beads, patterns of thread and rhinestones that were sewn onto her garments, but I loved the exotic make-up and silver on the soles of the models’ feet the most.

The result of all her handcrafting on each item is literally dazzling. I was sitting next to a great local designer who thought that the actual clothes lacked structure and shape – and I actually agree with her, but the thousands of embellishments painstakingly sewn onto each piece of clothing Sathal sources are a great distraction.

I interviewed her after her show:

“My collection is inspired by cosmic insight – an expression of what the universe could be like. There is a great sense of light, that’s why I’ve named the collection Constellation.

“Everything – every single piece is unique, one of a kind – the garments are fully art works. Embroidery is the method I use to unite the collection. Each piece is done by me, by hand. some garments take up to two years to make – I start one, work on it, leave it and go back to it again, when I feel inspired to do more. It progresses in waves.

“I source each garment. Each one comes to me with its own special energy… something magical. I am always surprised by the result of my work. I don’t intellectualize it – its as if my consciousness reveals itself in my work.

Is there any difference between the constellations from France and the ones we know of? Anyway, I can see how the designers were able to incorporate those constellations into the designs. They made one heck of a good job and I would recommend those work to my colleagues.

It is great to see these models expressing themselves in a way that is truly artistic. I will have to research more about French constellations so that I can appreciate this show more. Who were the designers of the clothes featured here?

There is something really captivating the way the designers made the constellations their influence in designing these clothes. The models are also able to portray a very stellar performance too. It is a fashion show that is worth a 2nd look.

The designer was very deliberate with the way he incorporated the constellations into his designs and I admire that about him. It’s not a very easy task to come up with such creative designs. I am sure that he will make a good amount of money from this.

I would say that the French Constellations work perfectly for the motif of this event in Africa. They could not have done it any better and I would have to give appreciation to the designers themselves. The models were shining like stars because of their outfits.
