New menswear store Loom opens in Parkhurst

By Sarah Badat | 26 October 2011

An exciting new menswear boutique, Loom, opened its doors to the trendy men of Joburg last month. Offering a limited collection of street apparel and high-end fashion, Loom is home to a handpicked selection of internationally renowned brands including Sixpack, Denim Demon, Comune and wait for it…Comme des Garçons!

I must commend the store on their visual merchandising – Loom has the feel of a European street boutique, with its minimal aesthetic and striking shop fittings which convey the cool, contemporary, urban feel of the merchandise.

The store is the brainchild of  Anthony Keyworth, Anne Caballé-Keyworth and Richard Shaw – the names behind Paul Smith in South Africa – and can be found on the Parkhurst strip on the corner of 4th and 10th ave.

Guest Blog: Africa Fashion Week, Part 3

By Sandiso Ngubane | 26 October 2011

Blogger, Maque DeGorgeous, reports

In the mood to impress was Ghana’s Aisha Obuobi of the Christie Brown label. The most impressive feature – one I’ve also come to appreciate as Obuobi’s signature was her using of tassels and ribboning to create draping-effects – all the while using African-inspired fabrics (which were neither Ankara, Seshweshwe nor Ashoke but a rather pleasant hybrid of these fabrics). Obuobi’s colours ranged from nude to neon with bursts of blue and purple accessorised by the aforementioned tassles and cow hide oversized clutch bags. It was also interesting to note the variety in her dresses, ranging from the miniskirt to coat dresses, pencil skirts to super-long dresses (with skin relief in the form of fabulous slits).

The much anticipated, following their 2010 Africa Fashion Week Collection, was Bunmi Koko who I believe failed to live up to the hype. Not to steal any light to their current offerings, a collection made-up of early nineties pleats (think back on the popular pleated palazzo pants and skirts from the late 80s/early 90s) was masterfully crafted in hues of purple, baby and powder blue, yellow and white. Simple, clean lines made up this off-the-peg collection with their plentiful separates (a big plus).

David Tlale

David Tlale

David Tlale, using his Volvo endorsement deal, took us to the SA mint in Midrand, Johannesburg, for his “Climate Change Couture Collection” and a couture collection it was. Using unpressed and pressed coins as accessories and design details, the collection featured a colour palette, which ranged from ocean blue (referencing water to tie into the collection’s title) to brown hues, green, orange and grey/silver. More impressively, Tlale’s male collection had feminine gowns, cowl neck shirts and gender-bender blouses featuring pleats as part of Tlale’s undeniable love for unsubtle, dramatic detailing. His origami-inspired pieces offered an oriental experience and gave detail to other frocks that would’ve simply watered down (yes, it’s a pun) his “couture” definition.

By Sarah Badat | 25 October 2011

The Cut Blog reports that British designer Gareth Pugh has teamed up with MAC to create a limited edition makeup range. Pugh’s collection consists of cream shadows, lipsticks, powder blushes and nail laquers in “futuristic yet primal” shades which resonate with the designer’s aesthetic.

The collection will be available at international MAC counters for a limited time only this December. Hopefully we can expect to find it in SA stores soon after.

Soucha

Soucha

Egypt-based Soucha displayed a collection one can only imagine wearing on a luxury yacht going down the Nile river – with copious amounts of French fermented grape juice flowing, naturally. Their summer-ready, kaftan heavy and inspired collection with wonderful displays of their home-country’s aesthetics (think Pharoahs and wonderful luxe fabrics with hints of Greek-inspired drapings) being plentiful, Soucha kept true to their much critiqued aesthetic of camp and overboard (see what I did there?) – and what’s not to love about that?

Thula Sindi

Thula Sindi

Thula Sindi presented his signature centred around his impeccable tailoring of a shift dress, keeping his regular clientele happy with the same look but differently and pleasantly displayed; lace and sheer material with hints of leopard prints reiterated his known frock-style. However, his introduction of tulle left me a bit gob-smacked as it crippled his minimalistic take on fashion.

The rise of tulle, pleats and a gravitation towards sheer as a material of choice according to our guest blogger, Maque Degorgeous, as he reports back from Africa Fashion Week 2011.

In an overt display of talent, colour, mixing of fabrics, and sheer material; African Fashion International’s Africa Fashion Week ramps were ablaze from the 17th to the 19th of October.Kluk CGdT opened Africa Fashion Week with a brilliant display of femininity and ruffles-free (as on would expect from the term) romance. The collection was reminiscent of John Galliano’s 2009 Autumn-Winter collection of sheer fabrication– perhaps a tribute to Malcolm Kluk’s former employer? – but pleasantly detailed with floral patches and a defined Kluk CGdT signature.

Design veteran, Marianne “Leopardfrock” Fassler, next on the ramps, lived up to her business namesake and played peek-a-boo with leopard prints hidden amidst polka dot and (mature) bohemian threads with undertones of African aesthetics. Dip dyes and advanced mixing of fabrics (think polka dot, leopard print sheer and lace) were the order of the day. As usual, her figurative signature was present; difficult to understand and interpret but an orgy-to-the-eyes nonetheless.

By Sarah Badat | 24 October 2011

From heels, to sunglasses, watches and even bags, the appearance of wood in all its natural glory is a huge hit in accessory design this season. Even local brands like Errol Arendz and We Wood are on board with this trend so there’s no excuse not to celebrate the use of this gorgeous natural material this Summer.

Italian Vogue to launch Wikipedia-style fashion encyclopedia

By Sandiso Ngubane | 21 October 2011

Italian Vogue will soon launch an online fashion encyclopedia, where readers will be able to contribute. While US Vogue has a similar Wikipedia-style portal, only staff are allowed to update it. According to The Telegraph, Italian Vogue editor says all contributions made by readers will be edited and vetted by staff. “We will try not to alter your pieces, but some will have to be modified and you have to accept that and not feel judged, just guided by someone who has more experience,” she is quoted as writing in her blog.

The site, according to the reports, will be launched in the next couple of months.

Sam Star shoes at Mememe

By Sandiso Ngubane | 19 October 2011

On Monday night at the GQ Awards I spotted a male friend wearing heels. Yes, he was wearing heels. And I can’t describe how jealous I am that he managed to pluck up the courage to do something I had wanted to do for so long, but was too chicken. Well, since Jerry has opened the doors for male cross-dressing that isn’t really drag, I guess this post is not solely targetted at women.

As of last week, Mememe Johannesburg started stocking Sam Star Shoes. Here are a few pics to give you an idea of what to expect from what they are currently stocking. Word is, more varieties will be hitting the shelf at the end of October.
