Mali-born, Paris-based Xuly Bet opened Africa Fashion Week late this afternoon – fashionably late! There were rumours that this was a 16 year old collection and, if that’s true, then I say his black metallic/PVC look has dated pretty well.
My favourite was this military-inspired coat dress – although he could lose the PVC socks over heels.
I’m sad the venue is half-empty for the early shows – perhaps fashion design students could be invited to fill the hall for the sake of atmosphere if nothing else.
David Tlale’s on at midnight tonight – I hope it’s worth it.
Oh my goodness, I have just realised that in my column in The Times this morning, I referred to British milliner Philip Treacy as having died. I was thinking about his muse Isabella Blow, who died about two years ago, as I wrote about his hats and made the mistake. How embarrassing and apologies to Mr Treacy for the error.

Don’t you love Marianne Fassler’s new Smart car – personalised for the designer who made leopard print stylish long before Roberto Cavalli even knew what a leopard was. I can’t wait to see the sexy Smart zipping around Jozi and I’m sure it’s going to feature in a few overseas photo albums when the World Cup visitors go home.

Africa Fashion Week kicks into gear as of next Wednesday and I strongly suggest you beg, borrow and steal to get your hands on a ticket. I’m sure the organisers are going to do what they can to get the WAGS in the front row so it should be lots of fun. And here’s hoping our designers come up with some beautiful collections to impress the visitors.
You can look at the schedule on African Fashion International’s website at http://www.africanfashioninternational.com/africaFashionWeek/schedule.html
I am most excited about Marianne Fassler at 7.30 on Thursday night and Boudoir d’Huitres on Saturday afternoon.
Let me know what you think if you do get to any of the shows.

I have a few obsessions: leather, brogues, jackets – and lace. I love the way this lace dress which would have looked pretty dire on the hanger, has been styled up so beautifully.
Carducci has invited three Frock Report readers and their partners to attend the finals of the Carducci Face of the Year competition at Africa Fashion Week on July 3. See my column in today’s paper http://www.timeslive.co.za/opinion/columnists/article506100.ece/More-than-world-beaders for details on how to enter.

I’m sure you’ve all been infected by football fever, as I have. I still haven’t solved my fashion dilemma because everything green and yellow looks appalling on me. The best I could do on Friday was a yellow shirt over leather pants and a leather polo neck and a beaded South African flag on a black beret. Any suggestions what I should wear to a Nigerian match tomorrow?
I was delighted to hear that Clive Rundle dressed R Kelly for the magical opening ceremony as well as Freshly Ground at the concert the night before. If only he’d got his hands on the gorgeous Shakira. She made beautiful music and danced like a dream but her grass skirt made her look like an extra from Madagascar!
If you’re a Clive Rundle fan, you will love this article from London’s Financial Times:

In case you haven’t noticed her yet, Alexa Chung is one of the style icons of the moment. This model/TV presenter/celeb has fabulous legs and always mixes up her style in a quirky way. I love this seriously sexy take on a preppy look – it’s a great way to look unforgettable and perfectly presentable at the same time.

I love this pic from Facehunter – long skirts seem to be on the up and I love their elegance.

I love it when New York dresses up to go out. These two outfits are from the Council for Fashion Designers of America annual do on Monday night. Tonne Goodman is wearing Michael Kors – I love the look.
