It seems that the Republicans are not just letting Ms Palin lick her wounds quietly in the Alaskan Hinterland – they are going to get their money back dammit. The latest heads up is that they are definitely heading to Alaska to collect the clothes ( I hope they leave the boots)
I just read this latest update in the Daily Mail:
Palin backlash continues as Republican lawyers head to Alaska to take back her $150,000 campaign clothes
The bitter McCain backlash against Sarah Palin continued today as it emerged that Republican Party lawyers were heading to Alaska to retrieve her $150,000 (£95,000) campaign clothes.
The vice-presidential candidate’s hopes of challenging Barack Obama in 2012 took a big dent as simmering tensions with the McCain camp finally boiled over into wide-ranging criticism of her conduct.
In a string of damaging briefings, it was claimed that Mrs Palin had spent ‘tens of thousands’ more on her clothes than budgeted for, that she once met McCain aides dressed in nothing but a towel and that she did not know Africa was a continent.
She was also unable to name the nations in the vitally important North American Free Trade Agreement.
There are only three. Her own, its northern neighbour Canada and its southern neighbour Mexico.
The 44-year- old former Republican running mate’s lack of general knowledge – and a storm over her designer wardrobe – emerged as she returned to her home state of Alaska.
Extraordinary details of bitterness and jealousy between the Alaska governor and John McCain were laid bare following their White House defeat.
McCain aides complained that Mrs Palin refused to be coached before TV interviews – even after it emerged she wasn’t sure about Africa’s status in the world.
Republican bosses also complained that Mrs Palin and her family spent even more on new clothes and shoes than previously reported.
One McCain aide described the Palin family shopping spree in some of America’s most exclusive department stores as ‘Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast.’
According to Newsweek magazine, a party donor who agreed to foot the clothes bill was expecting to pay out up to £15,000.
He was stunned when he received the bill for nearly £100,000. And that wasn’t even the whole tab, it was revealed yesterday.
Mrs Palin also allegedly leaned on some of her low-level handlers to put thousands of pounds worth of additional purchases on their personal credit cards.
Aides claimed a Republican Party lawyer is now being dispatched to Alaska to inventory the clothes and retrieve any still in the governor’s possession.

What humiliation for the republicans, even though they brought it on themselves. To my eyes and ears, the woman approached campaigning and communication like a cheerleading event or worse, a beauty contest. Attitude, atractiveness and confidence were all she believed was required; if the media is focused on you, you must have legitimately ‘arrived’. The cheesy charm offensive (wink, wink) was totally inappropriate at such a difficult time in history. Sure she is experienced, but she clearly has no use for knowledge, as she never attempted to engage the voter from a base of ideas and knowledge.
Nancy, couldn’t have said it better myself! John McCain’s was the worst run debacle I’ve ever witnessed. Sarah Palin needs to take some time and really polish herself better for the national stage. I think she’ll be ready at some future time, but not right now.
I clearly heard Gov. Palin say that the clothes weren’t hers and that they would be returned while the campaign said they would be donated to charity. So, how did they happen to end up going home with her? Just more embarrassing lies and behavior for the failed Republican Party to handle.
I’m so grateful that Obama/Biden won the election!
Of course they will take back the clothing! If they didn’t, she would have to declare it as income on her tax return. She has enough trouble lurking in the background re. her ill gotten per diem payments from Alaska, and her charging the state for the travel expenses of her children. Be assured, this Wisilla Hillbilly will go down in shame.
Oh, please Nancy and all you other right-wing bible-thumpers: DO go with Palin as your candidate in 2012! The whole world will be thrilled if you do, even though it doesn’t really matter because the right wing has pretty much sealed its fate for the next decade or so. Palin was McCain’s biggest mistake, but even without her they would have lost; the legacy of the dimwits in charge for the past 8 years could not be overcome, sorry kids. Had McCain had the sense to pick someone with boobs AND a brain like for instance Kay Bailey Hutchinson the race would have been more exciting but we would still have Obama in charge for the next 8 years, trust me. Oh, and if I sound like I’m gloating it’s because I am; learn to live with it. It might wear off in a couple of years, but for now the average christian Palin fan is gonna find me insufferable
Incredible! So the free world has finally resorted to Soviet style journalism. It is unfortunate that some readers abate and abet. I find it hard to believe that the lawyers released a press statement implying that they are heading to AK to retrieve clothing withheld, defiantly, by Palin. Palin has gone back to AK three times before the campaign was over. Common sense would dictate that an arrangement has been made between the parties to assemble the scattered items in one location. The McCain planes traveled in many states from east to west. Keep up the vitriol or should it be winners should learn to win with grace?
In response to jbStephens above, it’s obvious that Sarah, as opposed to “sara”, can spell good bye, as opposed to “good by”. Methinks thou doest protest too much! (LOL)
Crawford Texas gets to retrieve its village idiot and Wasilla gets back its, er, ah, ex-mayor, governor, whiz kid. If I was a moose in Alaska, I’d be keeping a low profile…Sarah is pissed and someone’s got to pay!
And now it’s time for some intelligence in the White House. Anyone remember what that feels like?
She charged upwards of 3 times the donor’s expected amount. Win or no win, that’s rude and unprofessional. That she asked aides, no doubt not paid a lot of money and not reimbursed by the time their credit card is due, is inconsiderate and selfish. This is precisely the sort of joker personality that should be kept far away from making serious decisions.
I hope that Sara Six-Pack endures this to do for the Republican party in 2012 what she did nor John McSame in 2008…
Didn’t Palin say the clothes belonged to RNC and she was only wearing them for the campaign. Why did she even take them to Alaska? For those who think they should forget about the clothes, well, there are laws the lawyers have to follow. They either declare the clothes as gift to Palin in which case she’ll pay tax on them or take them back, auction them off and report the difference as expense. I think they may break even or make profit if they auction them on Ebay.
What could these clothes possibly be worth now after they have been worn? How do they think they will get their $150,000 back out of them? Auction them off on EBay to Palin fans or take them to Goodwill?
Who are all of these “unnamed” sources? I don’t believe a single word of any of this vitriol. I think it is Obama supporters who are making this nonsense up.
GOOD!!! I hope the Republicians take back everything from PALIN!!! We all very well know Palin is excellent at telling LIES LIES and more LIES!! We all can assume that behind the scene stories is much more true than Palin is wanting to be let out and is very funny that the Republicians are going to Alaska to get the clothes back. It’s like ha ha Sarah you can’t just run back to Alaska and expect to take the “goodies” back with you!!! She didn’t earn a GOD DAMN THING!!! Yeah and Sarah Palin was obvisouly telling another LIE since she clearly said the clothes belonged to the RNC and or the clothes would all be DONATED to good will or something like that!! Yeah right Sarah was trying to escape and to see that anyone would just forget about it!!! NO SARAH GIVE THE GOD DAMN CLOTHES BACK AND QUIT TELLING LIES!! Sarah is SO UNBELIEVABLY unprofessional and extremely RUDE!! Ughh Palin makes most American’s just CRINGE with all her lies, backstabbing, trying to take all the clothes. Staffer’s I think were trying to shut up Palin because she made her running as VP all about her!! Ughh unbelievable!!! I thought it was hilarious when McCain’s staffers told Palin that she was not allowed to give any kind concession speech and just make her walk off!!! Glad they SHUT HER UP!!
I am a Republican who has never voted Democratic in all my years – until this past week. John McCain was truly irresponsible to nominate such a novice to be Vice President. Not only was she uninformed about the World’s Politics, Problems and even Geography, she never took the Civics Classes in College that at least would have explained the American Governmental System to her. She is such a poor candidate that I just can’t understand how Alaska voted this woman into office. She is a joke and is symptomatic of the problems that the United States is now faced with. I am glad that John McCain’s stupidity gave me the opportunity to really look into the other candidate, Obama. I found him to be an articulate, bright fellow who embodies the future hopes and dreams of our country’s youth. I am proud to have hime as a President-elect but I am still very angry at John McCain for this fiasco.
Ha Ha yeah Staunchwoman keep being BITTER!! All you REPUBLICIAN WOMEN can now go home and cry since your REPUBLICIAN husbands won’t be able to afford to buy everything for you at your whim!! If I was the staffers I would send their bills to Palin and her office and make her PAY BACK for everything she bought!!
Face it; some of you on the left are enamored by Palin, but can’t stand her because she is pro-life. Had she been pro-choice, you would be defending her instead of this barrage of hate. A person like Palin should have received designer clothing free of charge like Hillary Clinton does (see CBS article http://www.cbsnews.com/stories.....9410.shtml
Famous political fashion designers of the year, Susanna Chung Forest (Susanna Beverly Hills), states that “…it would be unusual for a candidate as famous as Sarah Palin to need to buy clothes.” She designed Hillary Clinton’s designer pantsuits.
The fact that the RNC and McCain’s aides spent money on what could have been an exchange for free advertising is the true indication of why McCain lost (tough lesson). Hillary’s stage cloths estimated at $6.5K each multiplied by 24 clearly exceed $150K. While the left is still obviously furious about Palin being a pro-life woman, the outrage among Republicans remains the stupidity and unclear economic message spewed by the McCain campain. Do I sense a bit of reverse chauvinism against Sarah Palin here? All this shows is now grossly mismanaged McCain’s campaign was.
@Sarah Palinzanidjit:
I couldn’t agree more with you! Though she just served as the final nail in the coffin of the blithering idiots that have run our nation for the last eight years (can you believe that Bush still fancies himself a “great leader of men” who has “given this country hope”!? Talk about oblivious; jeez!), she couldn’t have been a better poster child for sheer ineptitude the Republican party has spent the last decade flinging at us.
I, for one, hope beyond hope that she IS the candidate for 2012 (though from the backlash I’ve been reading, it seems unlikely at best). Nothing would go farther towards guaranteeing another Democrat win. Look at the exit polls people! Amongst REPUBLICANS, 60-85% (depending on your source. Let’s play Benefit of the Doubt and say 60%) say that Palin wasn’t ready, and influenced their decision negatively towards their party. Nice.
You don’t come back from political destruction like that! Seriously folks, cite me a single example of a politician in that much of the limelight getting lambasted as hard as she has been/is, and then coming back to a major position of power. Just one? Right.
So, bring her back in 2012 Republicans! Let’s see Obama/Biden vs… what? Palin/Big Bird? Palin/Limbaugh? Palin/Papa Smurf? I’m sure you can find another, equally insultingly useless running mate for her. Understand: pretty much ANYTHING Obama does is going to be supported, as things have already hit rock bottom (thank you Bush). I’ll be amazed if he’s not re-elected based on the current climate alone!
In fairness, I didn’t think *McCain* was that bad of a choice for their party. Out of touch with the times a bit maybe, but a patriotic, competent, and intelligent man. Personally, I think he simply ran 8 years too late. I don’t think we’d be in the hole we’re in now if we’d had him instead of Bush (though as a Dem, naturally, I’d have preferred Gore/Kerry).
Here’s the problem though: take a look at every candidate ever to hold the office at the beginning of their term and at the end. Being President ages a man (or woman, I’m betting, I don’t mean to imply sexism here) 4 years for every year they’re in office. It’s amazingly stressful and trying. McCain WOULD have died in office, and we’d have wound up with a President Palin, someone as incompetent as Bush in the most dire straits our country has ever faced? No thanks.
You put up a token woman you knew almost nothing about, who’s so out of touch she thinks $150k on clothing (see, Bra to Nowhere) is acceptable in an economic collapse, who has limited political experience in anything bigger than a New York City block’s worth of population, then you set her up guaranteed to get elected after your primary WILL die!? Can you GET more insulting?
I say good riddance for now, but I DO hope to see her back in four years.
“?PALIN’S POPULARITY?”
One might wonder how the electorate missed it. She did draw big crowds, but back in the good old days, few pubic executions and lynchings were poorly attended.
Mary, apparently a bunch of the clothes are in various sizes, so some of them were never worn, and they are being returned (unused). Others were worn, and they are supposed to be donated. She wore the same basic outfits over and over at the campaign. You see pictures of her in the different stuff, so it\’s obvious she rotated. Seeing is believing on that whole lawyer thing…with all the stuff that has been said, who knows if there\’s even any clothes in Alaska.
The thing is though…if people looked at McCain\’s website over the course of Palin\’s involvement, they\’d notice that there\’s no way this woman and her family were out shopping and running up more bills during the campaign. She was doing rallies approximately every 4 hours during the day and 4-5 per day. Flying in, landing, rallying, flying out…over and over. Her schedule was crazy, and I don\’t know how anyone can keep up that pace.
It\’s absurd, and if people stopped to think about it, they\’d realize that perhaps there\’s a grain of truth to some of the stories, but not much beyond that. It\’s obviously ludicrous. Yellow journalism…no credible sources…and all hearsay.
It\’s like the National Enquirer has taken over the major news networks. People may not have liked her, but they have really crucified her, and no one deserves to be harrassed this much. Throughout it all, she\’s been pretty gracious, so I think she deserves some props for that at the very least.
I say all this not based on her politics but just as a human being. She may have made some valid mistakes, and some may have been blown out of proportion, but it\’s gotten nasty, vicious, and personal, and for that, I truly feel for her. Nobody deserves to be mauled so badly. And, to me, it seems obvious that the aides are placing blame for a failed campaign. Just look at the prank call. Her aides didn\’t even catch that before passing it on to her. Why would she think it was fake if she depended on them to assess situations before handing stuff off to her. It shows how incompetent they were.
President-elect Obama had an amazing staff, and well, it showed.
During the primaries, many Republicans wanted Obama to win the nomination because they thought he would be the easiest to beat (heard it on NPR yesterday).
It would be scary if Palin was nominated in 2012 because people are crazy enough to vote her in … they did so for Bush TWICE, which shocked me.
Both make gaffes, but she is ignorant (not stupid) and arrogant; he is truly unintelligent. I believe she is capable of memorizing a lot of answers in the next four years.
If she were to get the nomination in 2012, it would be no joke.
This article is a fabrication, a lie. The clothes in question have already been returned or sent to charities. The Palins never shopped for the clothing or requested them. These clothes were offered to Sarah Palin by the Republican Party and the McCain campaign and were purchased by the Republican Party. End of story. Don’t you people have anything else better to do?
This is pure unadulterated horse puckey from the McCain camp to cover their own if, ands and buts and stupidity in their inept campaign. Witness that they did not figure out that the Joe the Plumber exchange was not about Joe’s taxes but Obama’s answer until it was all over the internet(ie McCain’s speech the next day). And they didn’t find the “bankrupt the coal industry” talk until it was way to late and own and own and own. It did not help that McCain goes barreling along without any thought or courtesy to anyone around him including his wife Cindy (and there was no warmth caught there as well)as opposed to Obama’s inate courtesy. I voted McCain but I don’t feel bad that he lost-he and his campaign deserved it.
It really sounds like Palin was all too used to having her way in Alaska. Thrust onto the national stage, she was painfully ill-equipped and quickly spun out of control. It takes a special head to believe that the earth is 6000 years old. And it takes the same head to be convinced you are right about issues without having any facts in support. Bush and Palin seem to have these special kinds of heads. If it weren’t for their strategists, they would be nowhere.
Thank you to everyone who voted for Obama: Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Socialists, Marxists, Communists, Everyone. Thank you thank you thank you thank you…
Jon…
For anyone who thinks the pro-choice issue is the catalyst to Palin’s lack of support among centrist liberals – as a life-long moderate democrat I can tell you that this is an issue I respect no matter your decision. This is a morally charged debate for many reasons and I just ask that whatever your opinion, you’ve considered the breadth of options available when contemplating your final action. This is not an easy issue, there are no easy answers. Ultimately, I believe it is the woman’s right to choose, but I certainly understand the position that’s pro-life.
That said, amongst all the distaste I’m left with from this election and the Republican’s clown parade of a campaign, the only thing I probably do respect about Sarah Palin is her commitment to her principles about abortion. She wins that arena for me hands down over all the other candidates. This is the one, and only place I admire her conviction and principles.
It’s her intellectually stunted view of the world, the lack of basic knowledge (how can you not know South Africa is a country on the continent of Africa???), her unwillingness to do everything in her power as a candidate to better prepare herself for the challenges ahead, and her seemingly “me me me” attitude about what this journey meant. Rather than growth, I saw an unsure, robotic, mean-spirited woman who was nowhere near my idea of a world leader. When she decides to take the job seriously, maybe I’ll take her candidacy seriously. Until then…
Not only is Palin an embarassment to the Republican party, she’s an embarrassment to women! Here she is, part of this historic election, and what does she do? Go on an unauthorized spending spree, refuse to take orders or be properly prepared for interviews! Please tell me how is this putting country first? She wrongly thought the election was all about her. Thank God enough of us realized just how wrong she is for this country. Someone who lacks self control, has limited knowledge of world issues, is divisive, and a whole list of other things we can think of, does not deserve to be in the distinguishd office of Vice President, much less of President! We’ve already had 2 squatters as President & VP for the last 8 years and truly could not afford to continue along this path.
Obama/Biden 08!
LMAO!!! Did anyone one see this hilarious youttube video of Palin and McCain getting couples counseling? The GOP Blame game at its best: Et tu, Palin? Palin 2012.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrUN8oldj9o
I think she should \”leave\” her wardrobe at Sen. Steven of Alaska\’s house. He\’s used to storing unrequested gifts. They\’ll never find it their.
Ha ha
Yes, intelligence in the White House in the form of a Marxist closet Muslim. You Obama lovers will end up being very sorry for your decision.
I agree that there just clothes and definitely some people are being petty, but there is more subtlety to this than initially meets the eye. Firstly it is a matter of marketing for the campaign. Palins brand required her to be the ‘every woman’ and by buying clothing that most people cannot afford puts her in danger of being labeled as elitist and thereby harming the campaign. Secondly and more importantly is that by her keeping the clothes or even seeming like she may places her and the McCain campaign of violating recent campaign finance reform laws. The violated law is the McCain-Feingold Act that was written chiefly by her running mate and serves as a cornerstone of his work and a symbolic sentiment of his earnestness. This puts McCain’s branding at risk and this is something that any politically minded person, especially the VP nominee, should have thought of first. This is why RNC lawyers are going to Alaska to retrieve the clothing.
I think it’s probably a little sad for the Baby Boomer Generation to turn the wheel over to Generation X, but it had to happen sooner or later and I hope they can find it in their hearts to continue to support the spirit of America. To say you look forward to the failure of the government is not putting Country First. Putting country first is putting your own feelings aside and rolling up your sleeves and doing everything you can to be helpful. Americans held an election, and there is going to be a winner and a loser, that’s the way the system is set up. There’s no guarantee your horse is going to win. If the disenfranchised invested a tenth of the time into finding ways to be helpful instead of pining over ways they can be more caustic than the person who posted before them, we would all benefit. As my mother used to say, all while I was growing up, “You don’t have to like it….” Work together as one nation. Move forward.
John McCain was a horrible candidate. I got the sense sometimes that he wouldn’t even mind if Obama won. Palin was the only person on that Campaign who was fighting tooth and nail to win. McCain isn’t even a Conservative anyway so it’s not a big deal. McCain and the Neo-cons are about to be thrown out of the party. Good Riddance. The Neo-cons, The Open Borders/Amnesty types, the pro-Hart-Celler Act types, and the (Un) Free Trade propagandists all need to be booted out. Then we can go back to being a Socially Conservative and Fiscally Conservative Party again. The Obama Zombies will soon be disappointed and lose all faith in Politics again and go back to being full-time readers of People Magazine and watching MTV Cribs.
Sarah,
You’re just the latest version of “New Coke!’
Brilliant marketing, but an inferior product. Not even a new can would sell you.
If you don’t believe that Palin spent too much on clothes, accusing OBAMA supporters of starting the rumors when you have NO FACTS to back up your belief is irrational and irresponsible. How about “I don’t believe it’s true…. and I DON’T KNOW who started the rumors!”
Many of you BLINDLY followed your last President into war 6 years ago… how about supporting THIS one, regardless of race, religion, or creed?
The election is over. Let the McCain’s and Palin’s be. People are so mean. The press makes things worst than whatthey are. We all need to join together and hope that our new President will follow through with the promses he made to the USA.
Boy, did I ever get on a site that is full of jealousy, hatred and “know-it-all” people. I appreciate the sensible posts but to those so filled with venom, reading your posts are so….so…..gross. Our family adores Sarah and can hardly wait till 2012. Go get fit for your “Community Service uniform shirts and armbands” and enjoy paying additional taxes. Me, I look forward to seeing Sarah’s smiling face in her own clothing, thank you very much.
Which person in their right mind when someone is so generous and says go by 3 suits with my credit card, would go out and go on a $ 150 000 shopping spree. It is greedy, inconsiderate and credit card fraud….If I give you my credit card to buy yourself a radio and you furnish your whole home with it. It is plain wrong and just plain greedy.
She says, “the continent versus the country when we talk about Africa there”–
So she STILL doesn’t know there isn’t a country called Africa?
Wow, America, we really dodged a bullet.
Give the clothes back Sarah, you don’t even know how to wear high fashion. A lady never wears a skirt above the top of her boots, that’s how hookers dress, dearie.
Good Ridance Sarah, you Jerk you!
~
Actually, for Sarah Palin, Canada would be her Eastern neighbor, as she lives in Alaska.
She must return the law, or she and the McCain-Palin campaign are in violation of federal law. The **ahem** McCain-Feingold law to be specific.
O, the Irony.
Of course, you can’t return used clothes. If she got real attached to something, she’ll have to buy it, and/or get a 1099 for it. The other alternative is watching 13 suitcases of clothes go to charity.
This is what happens when the Republicans get a Barbie doll beauty queen for a candidate. She was totally bolluxed by the job she had to do, so she returned to her real roots – being a bubblehead who gets by on her looks.

November 7, 2008 at 5:10 pmTaking back clothing? C’mon! Sounds as though someone is jealous of Sarah Palin’s popularity and angry about the Republican loss. Would the donor be taking back the clothes if John and Sarah had won the election? The donor should be going to their campaign manager who obviously did not do what was needed to get the job done! I hope and pray that the plans for 2012 include a campaign manager who is on par with Obama’s. Forget about Sarah’s clothes – concentrate on 2012!
