Friday party track – yes we can

By Aspasia Karras | 28 November 2008

Simon say’s here is your track
“I was lurking at a concert hall not too long ago and noticed a small group of befuddled Central Africans playing bongos in the lobby. Nobody paid much notice. It was quite sad. But it turned out just to be a soundcheck, and they turned out to be Konono No 1. The flyers call them a ‘Congolese trance group’ which is accurate in the sense that they were entrancing, but mercifully off-the-mark in terms of associations with backpacker hippy characters. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd so spontaneously and inescapably compelled to move.
At first just a couple of annoying bespectacled organic produce types were nodding their heads, but after about five minutes of electric mbira the entire audience – including the multitude of undernourished lone men with big headphones and satchels – were shaking their limbs wildly to the hypnotic wall of rhythmic noise (there was even a couple of Nordic women in the front row doing what I imagine they imagine is traditional Congolese
dancing). It was captivating, and sincere, and wild.”

Thanks Simon, thanks

Felt jolie

By Aspasia Karras | 27 November 2008

Felt is having its moment in the sun…
I was thrilled to read that one of the world’s most charming museums the Cooper- Hewitt in New York is showcasing the material in an exhibition in March next year. I hope they look south to our shores and Ronel Jordaan for some inspiration

I have just been looking at this lovely blog jjjjound – It’s a who’s who what’s type of livin.
It’s just a series of images without text of explanation other than the following epigram from Euripides “Know first who you are and then adorn yourself accordingly.”

Birds of a feather: Madonna and Pixie

By Aspasia Karras | 27 November 2008

So I know the fundamentalists are having a seizure and belching all over Mumbai with their outrageous acts of insane venom, but I feel that we at the Frock Report should stick to our guns and ignore the nutters in their entirety. I would rather focus of the very important question of the feather which seems to be in ascendance.

Here is Pixie Geldof spotted in this confection at the recent British Fashion Awards, whilst Madonna was sporting this little number last week. Read More…

2009 Pirelli Calendar – patronising dud

By Aspasia Karras | 26 November 2008

Eish – I try and avoid being a bit of a brat on this blog – but I think that the new Pirelli calender shot by Peter Beard is just basically sad. I don’t get the imagery – I find it patronising. There is not a single black model in sight despite the fact that it was shot in Africa. Whilst the models who did make the cut ( Daria Werbowy of Canada, Emanuela de Paula and Isabeli Fontana (who debuted in Demarchelier’s 2005 Calendar) from Brazil, Lara Stone and Rianne Ten Haken from Holland, Malgosia Bela of Poland and Italy’s own Mariacarla Boscono (who first appeared in the 2003 edition by Bruce Weber and again in Nick Knight’s 2004 Calendarare) look objectified in cheap poses. (Smoking ciggies next to an elephant in fishnet bodysuits for Pete’s sake…) It could be Loslyf.
A far cry from previous years efforts – How beautiful was the Demarchieler in China?

Sex in the Museum: SJP and the Met

By Aspasia Karras | 25 November 2008

Want to know the sartorial significance of this fellow’s outfit? Then best you listen to Sarah Jessica Parker. She has just recorded an audio tour for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where she takes the more fashionably minded tourist on a fabulous tour of Renaisance brocades, Rembrandt ruffles and Benin breastplates. Sounds perfectly delightful.

Grey matters: Nicole Kidman’s roots

By Aspasia Karras | 25 November 2008

I am fascinatied that the fact of Ms Kidman’s roots has caused such a stir – is grey the last age frontier? A friend of mine has just given up the grey experiment after an extended effort to just give in to the process of ageing naturally – it really is immensly tough to just give in to the frazzled grey lock as it sprouts atop of your head. I know the pain first hand. Anyway here is a very amusing article about the grey debate

Where does women’s money go?

By Aspasia Karras | 25 November 2008

So its pay day and I thought I would pre-empt the eventual disappearance of all ready cash.
This is really where it all goes.
