A friend once described long-established Durban designer Amanda Laird Cherry as a frustrated artist. I was reminded of that description when I asked her about her Spring/Summer collection and got this rather cryptic answer: “The words I’ve chosen to describe the collection are ‘complicity’, and ‘shifting dust’. It’s a reflection of where I’m at right now.”

Luckily she also gave me some more concrete clues. “The range has natural fibers, linen and cotton and textured silks; colours are from bone to cream and ivory, and a myriad of greys from light to charcoal; jade, and beetroot. The styling is a mixture of avant guarde and wearable.”

Once again, Amanda enlisted the help of traditional crafters to create her new look. “I’ve used them in various ways, for fabric printing and embroidery and accessories. It brings a wonderful depth to what I’m doing.”

Amanda Laird Cherry’s Spring/Summer range is unveiled at the Sandton Convention Center on Wednesday 27 August.
