IT is a truth universally acknowledged that a Jane Austen novel in which zombies are hunted down and decapitated by a young lady of modest means but charming manners must be a crime against literature. But possibly more fun than a barrel full of squirrel monkeys.
The new book by Seth Grahame-Smith, published by Chronicle Books, combines the original text by Jane Austen with new, expanded accounts of flesh-eating zombiism. Furthermore, it comes with “20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice)”.
Here’s a synopsis:
As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead.

OMG! I just read Pride & Prejudice last year. This has GOT to be better than the original.
I’m an Austen fan and I find this story to be highly appropriate. Pride and Prejudice is not just some love story. It’s a story about desperation. Miss Bennet and her sisters must marry and they must marry successfully by the time their father dies or they will be destitute. I think many modern readers miss the significance of that point. I’d love to see it emphasized by a simultaneous desperate fight against zombies.
I’m looking forward to reading this book.
