Vinous Vuvuzelas

Sitting on the Roundhouse lawns under Lion’s Head on Thursday morning with Allister Kreft from Under the Influence, tasting coffee Pinotage was one way to get into the soccer swing of things. Especially with two vuvuzelas on the table in front of us alongside the Diemersfontein 2008, Zevenwacht 2009 and Café Culture 2009: still life with vuvuzelas. Al is one of the savviest winemarketers in town and no wonder he was off to negotiate a distribution deal with a senior Stellenbosch supplier later in the afternoon. But first he was filming our tasting on his flip camcorder, more excited with the technology even than with the wines.

Bacchus in Hong Kong: Simon Says

Earlier this week aging Goth Robert Smith from The Cure was hailed a “Godlike Genius” by NME magazine. Simon Tam, director of the Independent Wine Centre in Sheung Wan (Hong Kong) and wine adviser to several Asian pop stars, claims the same for Meerlust winemaker Chris Williams. Simon started off calling him “God” before launching on an even more hyperbolic trajectory, comparing Chris to “a young Brian Croser” on the evidence of his miraculous Foundry Syrah.
