The BBC reports “global wine production will fall to its lowest level since records began in 1975.” Which is good news indeed for hard-pressed SA wine producers. With the Rand under politically-induced pressure, the tills in Tulbagh should soon be ringing. While the sound of back slapping after Cape Wine 2012 has died down to a modest rumble, a dreadful though crossed my mind. Did WOSA invite the right people?
An electronic questionaire from surveymonkey.com arrived in my inbox, asking:
Where did you travel from in order to attend Cape Wine 2012?
Cape Town, South Africa
Durban, South Africa
Johannesburg, South Africa
Other European country
Other South African City
Woops! What happened to Denmark and France, both in the Top Ten of current export destinations? They must be “other European country.” What about Mozambique, our neighbour? Angola? Heck, go big: the whole of South America!
Is Cameroon a new hot export destination for Chardonnay? Korea isn’t even on my SAWIS exports spread sheet but a Korean granny makes a mean dim sum at I ♥ My Laundry on Buitengracht, Cape Town. Time for some re-education at WOSA with special emphasis on Geography.
