A rude blast of ageism from infantile baby blogger TVDionysus via twitter “read 3 blogs this am say we use term steen. Maybe if you over 50 like Pendock, but not the new wine rat pack…” Well I certainly don’t use the term steen TV-glotzer, you must have confused me with one of the oumensgessigies at the Grape communal blog. But on the ugly subject of ageism, eyebrows were raised by the selection of a “chilled wine” for summer in the Weekend Financial Times this morning.
Three SA whites featured (Australia one, New Zealand null points): a blend, a Chenin Blanc and a Sauvignon Blanc from the unfortunate 2008 vintage. The Chenin (note to rats: not Steen, and the FT wine pundit is well over 50!) comes from Waterkloof and gets the ultimate sighted tasting note “Brit Paul Boutinot is making waves in South Africa with substantial investment in his Waterkloof winery. Chenin is the Cape’s great vinous treasure.” Not a syllable wasted on describing the wine.

Brit Paul Boutinot
With 2010 SA Sauvignons being released at a fast and furious rate, the choice of a two year old Sauvy from Mulderbosch seems perverse as 2009 was a far superior vintage. But then perhaps UK retailers have unsold stock to shift, always an issue for sighted compilers of luvvie laundry lists.
Not that I’m at all ageist when it comes to the grassy green grape. Earlier this week I enjoyed a 1995 Neil Ellis Elgin Sauvignon Blanc with some Mozambican prawns at the Troyeville Hotel. The wine was crisp, full of intense gooseberry panache and an excellent match with the Mozambicans.

June 27, 2010 at 7:37 pmHi Neil
Glad to see I am giving you interesting copy. Todays interview in the Times with Christain Eedes was certainly far more interesting regarding the Blind vs Sighted debate. As you are firmly in the Blind Camp, I am sure your punt of De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2009 was in no way influenced by the fact that you spent the Wacky Wine Weekend as a guest of the De Wets…and that the wine was tasted blind around the camp fire?
Cheers!
