Ernie Els’ 350 Km/hr Ferrari Scaglietti has arrived from Italy and partner Jean Engelbrecht was enjoying himself on the Helderberg yesterday, whizzing between his trio of cellars (Rust en Vrede, Guardian Peak and Ernie Els). The milliseconds Jean saves commuting justifys the $300 000 cost of the machine, although removing the vicious speed bumps on the farm roads will be charged to another budget.

The new acquisition explains the absence of Jean’s three estates from Elmari Swart and Izak Smit’s Essential Guide to SA Wines: terroir and travel as there was obviously no budget left to pay for a “sponsored profile.” Which leaves the field clear for Preston Haskell to fly the terroir flag for the “Helderberg Annandale Pocket.” Although if you can afford a Ferrari Scaglietti, you probably don’t need GPS waypoints from local wine hacks.

Ernie’s trophy for Sustainable Producer of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London was well deserved as the Scaglietti has one of the smallest carbon footprints of any supercar around. All music to the ears of IWC co-chair Tim Atkin and his campaign opposing carbon-unfriendly packaging (COC-UP).
