My description of Narina Trogon as “Braamfontein’s brave little restaurant” took on new meaning last night as the Rose’s taxi driver refused to drive to Braamfontein from town via Sauer Street – seems that the taxi rank at Bree Street has now been claimed by crooks. “The police did a raid last week” he said in a hushed voice “and found condoms and a gun with the number filed off.”

So I guess the Rose’s nighttime route to Narina is via the M1 and the Smit Street off-ramp. Which I will bear in mind tomorrow night when the charismatic music guru, Charles Leonard will be DJ-ing at Narina from 8pm ‘til late. His set will include jazz, soul, R&B, funk, rock, indie, reggae, soca, dancehall, dub, dubstep, hip-hop, kwaito, bubblegum, electro, soukous, highlife, Afrobeat, benga, Raï, Jùjú, Palm-wine, Chimurenga, Cumbia, Makossa, Tropicalismo, and more, according to Aryn Guiney.

I do hope she persuades Charles to include some Tom Waits to further the musical education of head chef Ross Wilson who is rolling out a spring menu and some funky cocktails that evening. Noticing that the restaurant calls itself Narina Trogon & The Canopy reminds me of a visit to Robertson last month for Robertson Slow.

The highlight of the weekend was an afternoon spent hacking up dead pigs on Wederom farm with Almien du Toit, a raconteur who makes Oom Schalk Lourens look like a Trappist monk. Almien’s daughter trained as a chef in Stellenbosch and the family now offer catered weddings on the farm. “We had this poppie phoning from London to arrange a wedding in February. She didn’t want a sit down lunch but was very insistent on canopies. She went on about them so much, I eventually told her we had plenty of trees on the farm and shade would be no problem.” I wonder who told Almien that canapés and canopies are not the same thing, even in Robertson. Maybe it was Ross.
