Diesel dumps poster ads.

By Jackie May | 30 June 2010

These ads have been banned by the UK standards watchdog. They will cause “serious offence” to adults. Aren’t they hilarious? Can you take them seriously? Below is the Reuters story from today. And here is the SKY story.

Toy Guns.

By Jackie May | 30 June 2010

I haven’t succoumbed to buying toy guns for my children – yet. They’ve tried persuading me. And I’ve resisted. They are wanting water pistols now thinking I’ll soften. I’m refusing. And then I saw this pictures and feel even more adamant.

Atheist parenting.

By Jackie May | 17 June 2010

IN THE Old City of Jerusalem sits one of the most sacred places of worship for Christians. Not far away, near the Mount of Olives, is the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. At the foot of the Dome of the Rock is the Western Wall, where last week hundreds and hundreds of Jews people went came to celebrate Shavuot.
For Jews, Christians and Muslims these few square kilometres surrounded by the ancient yellowing stone walls of the Old City hold are the home of places with deep and layered religious meaning.
It’s also here in this area that a war between Jews and Muslims (or Israelis and Palestinians, if you prefer) has been raging for what to many seems like an eternity. It’s been a brutal war. It’s a war for land, for who can claim this holy city as their own. Read More…

My children’s skin colour.

By Jackie May | 17 June 2010

WE WERE in the mad morning panic when my daughter asked me if I had something that would make her skin darker.

Taken aback, I stopped the urgent hurrying-along for a moment, and asked her why.

“I don’t like my white skin,” she said.

“Oh, no, I don’t have anything that can help you, sweetie. Why don’t you like your pale skin,” I asked as I smeared a thick layer of sun screen on her peaches–and-cream complexion. Read More…

Home. Moving on.

By Jackie May | 17 June 2010

LAST week was a tough one. There were many good reasons for it not to have been all song and dance. But the two overwhelming ones are my baby daughter and the sale of our house.
I love my house. We bought it three years and two babies ago. Then, it was large, airy and sunny. Now it is small, airy and sunny. The time has come for us to move on and, after many long months on the market, finally a young, childless couple will be the new owners of the house I have nurtured along with my children.
It is on these sanded floorboards that my youngest daughter stomps loudly before daybreak in the morning, demanding various things as we all try to complete our night’s rest. Read More…

Benjamin Pogrund responds to ‘Face to face with Israel’s wall’.

By Jackie May | 10 June 2010

I received this email response from Benjamin Pogrund to my article which appeared in last week’s Sunday Times.

Dear Jackie

You are right to focus on the barrier/wall/fence. It is horrible and the concrete section of it especially is not only an ugly sight but has done enormous harm to Palestinian existence (even though only part of it has been built and it looks as though it will not be completed). But, if I may suggest it, it does need a bit of context. The barrier idea arose during the intifada as a security measure, to keep out suicide bombers. If you lived through that period you would understand how much it resonated with a lot of people. It was a truly terrifying time, especially in Jerusalem. My own view then was that the barrier was an extreme step and I opposed it – but I understood why people were clamouring for it. The actual construction has perverted and manipulated the original aim and it has been used as a land grab. Read More…

I know nothing about soccer. Apparently.

By Jackie May | 10 June 2010

This morning I announced that Bafana Bafana will win this tournament. My husband laughed and said that I obviously know nothing about soccer. He then referred me to the ZonalMarking site where I read “South Africa will need home support – and luck”. I will ignore what I read, and continue to believe that pigs can fly.

Flag Installation. Sue Pam-Grant.

By Jackie May | 9 June 2010

clip_image002
I was again amazed and amused by Sue Pam-Grant this morning. I drove down to school and work and passed under her new installation. It was early morning and the light filtered through her white clothes and cloths hanging from two 20 metre steel cables stringing across the busy 9th street, outside her studio Front View 3, Melville.
She says that this installation is her conversation with the Mad Flag Urban Johannesburg Landscape. Contact the artist on 082896 7112 for more information about this 2010 work.

Today. Here. Now. 2010.

By Jackie May | 9 June 2010

I started the day at the Westcliff Hotel. I had breakfast overlooking the views over the zoo and Rosebank. I sat with my colleague hoping to spot somebody rich and famous… We saw journalists only. Back at the office it was hard to concentrate. Vuvuzelas blowing, people singing – way too much excitement. It’s great. And we’re all delighted to be here now in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Sandton apparently was fabulous. I couldn’t go, but here’s a picture.
