Mr President.

By Jackie May | 31 January 2010

You seem busy. But very busy with the wrong activities.

I hope you find the time to do the work we desperately need you to do.

It’s none of my business, I know, but you don’t seem to be condomising. Isn’t this a problem?

Today’s Sunday Times reveals that our President Mr Jacob Zuma has fathered his 20th child. The mother is the daughter of his friend, Irvin Khoza – “Iron Duke”. The daughter is Sonono Khoza, a 39-year-old divorcée.

I am not sure how I would feel in twenty year’s time about a good friend of mine fathering my grandchild. I imagine I’d be pissed off. Very very much so. I would feel betrayed too. I know she’s an adult but certain boundaries have been disrespected here. And what about our first ladies? How do they feel about this child?

The Lives of Real Black People.

By Jackie May | 25 January 2010

In a review on a Guardian blog about tonight’s BBC broadcasting of the Mrs Mandela, the writer says that “it’s good to see film makers dramatising the lives of real black people”.
Incredible isn’t it? Black people. Real? WTF! Where the fake ones?

The film sounds interesting though. Hannah Pool, the writer, says that “there is a scene where Winnie keeps her newly liberated husband waiting while she gets ready to face an eagerly awaiting crowd of journalists, politicians and well wishers. As Nelson exasperatedly hurries his wife along, she turns to him: “I have waited 27 years for you, the least you can do is wait a few minutes for me.” This small, almost mundane tension between husband and wife is the film’s strength.”

It’s showing tonight at 9pm on BBC4; followed at 10.30pm by The Real Winnie Mandela. If you can access BBC4 watch for the local times.

We won’t. We do… or don’t we?

By Jackie May | 25 January 2010

Either Brangelina doesn’t know what it’s doing or the media doesn’t. Brad’s family don’t want him with Angelina and this is putting stress on their relationship as it would on any relationship. But then another source in The Sun claims that they are doing fine – perhaps a little tired. Exhausted for sure. But according to the Daily Mail she says he’s boring and toxic and Brad says she needs to see a shrink.

What is fabulously interesting is the extent of their wealth. This from looking good and from the ability to memorise a few lines. They, says the Daily Mail, have a £205 million fortune, and several homes between them.

Who knows how much of this is true, but what we do know is that the media is indefinitely interested in this couple.

Happy? Hard to tell.

Happy? Hard to tell.

The Brad and Angelina dream. Over.

By Jackie May | 24 January 2010

Or not. One never knows. I was convinced it was all perfect after hearing about their family holiday Cottar’s Safari in Kenya.
But according to The Times of London the two “have signed papers paving the way for a legal separation with joint custody of their six children, it was reported last night”.

My child, pornography and the iPhone.

By Jackie May | 22 January 2010

MY HEART leapt into my mouth the other day.
I was sitting on my bed with my little family. It was one of those rare moments of peace. I was paging through the weekend papers, my last chance before the next week’s news deluge. One child was playing with her new doll, forcefully stuffing a dummy into its mouth. The other two were having a moment on each of their parents’ cell phones: my son playing games on his dad’s device, and my daughter, I thought, looking at photos on mine. Both are iPhones.
Mine I use only as a phone. For financial reasons, I haven’t changed my Vodacom contract to include the ability to download data.
Or so I thought. Read More…

ANC leather jackets. Anyone?

By Jackie May | 21 January 2010
My favourite

My favourite

I got to work last week to find my colleagues transfixed by this web page. A collection of leather ANC jackets for sale. Not cheap. I thought I would buy this one – if I really had to – for the cold winter Fifa world cup soccer nights later this year.
Ok, not really.

Gina Ford. Ikea instruction manual.

By Jackie May | 21 January 2010

I love this. The UK Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg told Isabel Oakeshott of The London Times that following Gina Ford’s advice is like following an Ikea instruction manual. Ever tried the Gina Ford parenting schedules? Not for the faint-hearted.

Oakeshott’s article says that “I tentatively suggest they try Gina Ford’s strict, to-the-minute routines to encourage their baby to sleep through the night, and he puts his head in his hands. “Don’t get me onto Gina Ford,” he groans, saying he does not agree with her methods. He and his wife tried to follow her baby-training timetable with their first child but found it “like following a sort of Ikea assembly instruction manual”.”

Voodoo Doll on auction. Pat Robertson

By Jackie May | 20 January 2010

It’s fair to say that some right-wing Americans are truly unbearable. Did you see what Pat Robertson said on last week about the Haiti earthquake disaster? If not, and to remind those who did, he said that Haitians had been punished by God for having long ago “made a pact with the devil”. The Financial Times reported this Saturday that “Mr Robertson’s claim that Haiti had made a pact with the devil dates from the island’s “Black Jacobin” slave revolt against French colonial rule in the late 18th century making Haiti – then Hispaniola – the first non-white colony to win independence from a European power.”

The right-wing talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, also had an appalling contribution to make (not financial) when he told his listeners that Obama sees this disaster as a political opportunity. He also said regarding donations that “We’ve already donated to Haiti. It’s called the US income tax.”

Sies manne!

And then this voodoo doll of Pat Robinson became available for sale on eBay. All proceeds were going to Haiti relief. But since I drafted this post, the item has been removed from eBay!
