While many people in and out of Zimbabwe are desperately trying to do good to get the country back on democratic track, it appears that Old Mutual has other interests – investment interests. The insurance company is the second largest shareholder in Zimbabwe Newspapers Ltd. which publishes The Herald, one of the Zanu-PF mouthpieces. And so Old Mutual, Zimbabwe, is guilty of directly supporting the Mugabe regime.
Yesterday, OM defended its interest in a statement: “Our investments are made for the benefit of our policyholders, meant to meet needs and expectations in terms of return and not contingent upon political consideration. Disinvestment from major assets would ultimately have adverse consequences for our policyholders.”
Passop, a refugee rights organisation in Cape Town, made a call for Old Mutual to disinvest from Zimbabwe Newspapers. The organisation said the Herald and its sister papers were among the ruling Zanu-PF’s most vital tools “for retaining its place as one of the most infamously corrupt and brutal governments of the last decade”.
Passop has started a petition – Stop Old Mutuals Support for Mugabe’s Propaganda Machine. Go sign it.

Alisdair, the price of eggs in China today is 20 yuan for large chicken eggs and 29 yuan for large duck eggs…each.
Herald is a government owned newspaper, ZANU PF has its own mouth-piece called The Voice. Get your facts right if you want to be taken seriously
I am an Old Mutal Policy holder and have been for many years. I await further developments and will change to another company if OM are found to be supporting Mad Bob in any way or form.
I’ve always suspected that big business is helping to keep Mugabe and his fellow thugs in office.
It’s no surprise to me

November 12, 2009 at 6:16 pmI am so glad that someone in SA is finally noticing the hand of the ANC SA Govt in protecting Mugabe, ZANU and assisting his regime in its racism and oppression.
Could you tell me why 300 Million Rands, 2 million rounds of ammunition, 6 millin of chines ammunition, protection at the UN, a General’as non existent report into “free and Fair” elections and repeated excuses for Mugabe and ZANU reneging on the “deal” of a “Unity Govt” has not managed to get you to do what investment in a newspaper has?
