THE week that was brought us rain, wind, and ice-cold temperatures. A bizarre end to a lovely spring some said. Others questioned whether we should be worrying about global warming at all.
Putting my own fear of the changing weather patterns aside, I took to last week’s Big Chill with glee. Any excuse to light the fire, and cuddle up with my babes to watch the Teletubbies AGAIN.
We have one DVD of the tubbies which I can assure you I’ve watched a few hundred times per child. Because as you know, I know, and we all know children like repetition. It makes them feel safe. Watching and listening to the same children’s story offers them a predictable place, a place that they can get to know very well and a place where they belong.
So when you’re ready to tear your hair out at the sound of the irritating refrain at the beginning of whatever child’s DVD de jour it is, remember that this is not necessarily a bad space for your kid to be in. On the contrary, if you’re comfortable with the story, it should be a safe space for your babies.
On Thursday, I had the flu and stayed home to be sick. On hearing that I was home for the day, my big daughter decided her throat was sore too. And so it came about that we all watched The Teletubbies Hands, Feet and Dirty Knees again.
I love the inane joyfulness of tubbyland. The bright unintelligible creatures amuse me and my children equally. Teletubby land takes me “over the hills and far away” to a psychedelic fluffy space filled with giggling pastel-coloured creatures and a few real-life rabbits.
But unbeknownst to me then, it would be the final time I watched Po, Lala, Dipsy and Tinky Winky scrub those hands and feet. The following night I got home to find The Teletubbies Hands, Feet and Dirty Knees torn in two. Somebody small and cute had decided that enough is enough. Finally in our home, it’s time for tubby bye bye.
