I read last night with interest Lin Sampson’s…. no idea what’s happened to this post.
I had written about reading Lin Sampson’s article, Pavement Special in Lifestyle which was fascinating. A white suburban woman turns to walking the streets. I wanted more from her though.
The other story I found fascinating was that the London call-girl Belle de Jour revealed her identity over the weekend. She wanted to beat an ex-boyfriend at spilling her beans. Who is she? Dr Brooke Magnanti, a research scientist who spent 14 months working as a call girl while she was a student. She kept an online diary, Belle de Jour which became a book which became a TV series.
Her blog is lovely. It reveals a sensitivity and compassion. A recent post about exercising her rage gland was particularly lovely I thought. Directed at a blog post by a facebook “friend” she has a good general bitch about a certain kind of girl – the rich privileged ones. But then she thoughtfully attacks the “friend’s” attack on men. This line got up Belle de Jour’s nose: “Is preventing violent assault or murder part of your daily routine, rather than merely something you do when you venture into war zones?”
She has a thoughtful rant, an insightful one.
