She looks shattered. Exhausted. And highly annoyed. I can only imagine how tired she must be after countless speaking engagements, appearances, diplomatic visits for days on end. It’s the longest international trip she has made as the Secretary of State. And maybe the last long one. The effects of the exhaustion are obvious in this video.
A student at a university in the Democratic Republic of Congo asked her what her husband thought about Chinese investment in the country. This is what she said: “Wait, you want me to tell you what my husband thinks? My husband is not the Secretary of State, I am. If you ask my opinion, I will tell you my opinion. I am not going to be channeling my husband.”
She was clearly upset. Poor chap. Apparently he later apologised to her. He had wanted to ask about Obama’s thoughts and the translator got it wrong.

Africans beware Africans who tell you that they are in politics to serve their people. They all tell lies all the time…
The media coverage shows yet another double standard example. When Secretary of State Clinton reacts by standing up for her expertise and intelligence, it is interpeted as her showing her temper, being annoyed or being exhausted. It reminds me of how the media would exploit her showing of emotions during her primary campaign or the time they made a big deal out of her showing some cleavage in one of the outfits she wore. Responsible reporting would have covered intelligent discourse that occurred during the meeting.
One last thought: It would have been virtually impossible for an interpretor to have thought a questioner might have asked what a male politician’s wife thought of a particular situation.
Karen, Do you have to play the gender card? Suppose someone were to play the race card and assert that Hilary Clinton’s adoption of a dismissive, condescending, and outraged tone indicates a lack of respect for an African student. In a London or Washington DC Press Conference, she probably would have replied: Why don’t you ask Bill himself?
Racist is correct! The US is exploiting an entire countrys mineral wealth without caring who lives and who dies as long as you can get what you want. At least China is helping with jobs, education and helping build an infrastructure. The US is providing nothing except divisiveness, chaos and bloodshed.
Actually, when you listen carefully, Hillary’s response is intelligent and to the point. The only problem is she’s a woman, so naturally, you are goint to insert emotional impact here to muddle the waters, right? The woman’s answering the darn question from an idiotic person who obviously lives in a country where the women are treated like sheep and is used to giving his girls permission to speak up! What a disgrace!
And if the dumb translator is the originator of this moronic question, then fire the moron!
I admire Hillary’s repsonse. I would have said something a heck of a lot harsher!
Yehudi, I did not play the gender card; the media did. The media would rather sensationalize Secretary of State Clinton’s response because they think it is what the public wants.
You said, “In a London or Washington DC Press Conference, she probably would have replied: Why don’t you ask Bill himself?” You are making a lot of assumptions in your statement. None of us knows if this would be her reaction, but having followed her political career, I doubt that she would have responded as you say in your hypothetical example.
Afterthought:
What Secretary of State Clinton went overseas to promote was the terrible situation of the women in the Congo, but before this incident, most US citizens didn’t even know she was overseas. Now we know she’s there, and we know WHY she’s there because of this misinterpreted question and her reaction to it NOT because the media thinks that WHY she went is important. Ironically, her reaction brought more attention to the reason for the trip than if she’d been polite.
Yes, Karen, how ironic indeed that the only reason the ‘celebrity journalists’ have given any attention to Hillary Clinton’s reason d’etre in the Congo is due to her appropriate anger at being asked such a deeply misogynist question.
What does this lack of newsworthiness tell you? It’s one of the reason that they didn’t report on HIllary’s visit at the Congolese hospital where girls as young as 6 months and women as old as 85 were lying damages as result of being gang-raped by the Congo militia. She apparently shed a tear in there that same morning she was being asked to protect her self-esteem and that of millions of African women who are treated worse than chattels.
Bravo to SoS Hillary Clinton. Her firm, no-nonsense response was restrained in view of the demeaning tone and intent of the questioner. She was asked to be the “mouth” of her husband and Mutabo, that idiot football player! Remember Joe Biden’s threat to the Russians “************ men, come up to the bar and pay your damn dues!”
And Obama’s brushing off rudely the female young reporter “Not now sweetie!” Nest day he had to apologize when it was all over the ‘media’. And Al Haig’s “I am in charge now!” when Reagan was shot! And Krutchev’s banging with fury his shoe on the table in the 60s during the cold war??
Hillary shone some light on the genderic Holocaust taking place in the Congo. Wish that planted guy who asked the insulting question (planed) would visit the hospital and change some bedpans! Better still, give him a few lashes a la Taliban!
Thank you, Hillary. You go, girl! (Jonanthan Cape said that today in the N.Y.times)
What I always said when I was out in the 9-5 work world. “When a man is aggressive and assertive, HE’S A GO GETTER, but when a woman is the same, She’s a ***** and I’m Proud of it”. I’ve dealt and fought that mentality for well over 50 years and while passing the baton I hope we NEVER EVER slip back into our shells again. GO GETEM Secretary of State HILLARY CLINTON! God I love the way that sounds.

August 11, 2009 at 3:14 pmAfricans, please do not trust Clinton and her New World Order cronies. This is about Africas mineral wealth and China vs. Usa fighting for it by dividing Africans. The same way it has been done by greedy colonial powers for hundreds of years. Africans are so hungry and gullible that they can be manipulated into anything, including murder. Africans, beware of the New world Order and AfRICOM.
