Last Thursday night Obama addressed the issue of race publicly for the first time in more than a year. He told the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that “The pain of discrimination is still felt in America” and he urged black parents to take responsibility for their children, to encourage them to aspire to great things:

“That means putting away the Xbox and putting our kids to bed at a reasonable hour,” he said. “It means attending those parent-teacher conferences, reading to our kids and helping them with their homework.”

He said it also means looking after neighbours’ children and setting higher goals.

“They might think they’ve got a pretty good jump shot or a pretty good flow, but our kids can’t all aspire to be the next LeBron or Lil Wayne,” he said. “I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers. I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court justice. I want them aspiring to be president of the United States.”

And again last night, he touched on race, and racial profiling, when he answered a question at a news conference about Professor Henry Louis Gates who was arrested last week for allegedly breaking into his own home. The press conference was intended to seek support from the American public on Obama’s health reform plans. But one of the final questions was about Gates. And here is Obama’s impassioned answer which caused a flurry of activity in the online community last night:

Why is Obama jumping to this idiot professor’s defense and making assumptions? The guy has a record of yelling the “R” word every time it’s convenient to him. This will backfire on Obama..he should keep quiet.

First off….Using “stupidly” in a sentence like he did is just as bad as some of Bush’s responses in the past.

You would expect that a President would have a more complete vocabulary….I would think he should have said “inappropriately”, “questionably” or even “moronically” but that shows you what we’re dealing with today.

By everything known in this case, it seems that Gates was trying to force the issue. Most people would be happy & relieved to know that someone had called the police when it “APPEARED” that their house was being broken into!! Or would they rather people kept their shades down and hid in their homes never noticing or reporting POTENTIAL criminal acts???

The problem here is that when anything like this happens, most blacks cease to think logically and go off on a wild tangent about racism, etc.

Had the police just barged into his house with no other reason or report of a POSSIBLE burglary occuring, then they would have been out of line and Gates’ reaction would be understandable. But after finding out why the police were there, Gates, being a supposedly highly educated man, should and could have simply understood the situation and calmly sorted out the situation with the officers.

There was no need for the flying off the handle, “yo mama” (I mean seriously, REALLY???…from a Harvard professor??!!!) and having the incident spiral out of control like it did. If anyone is responsible for the incident snowballing out of control it is Gates not the police!

Circumstances are not always clear in these matters. Example: The soldier that was captured, then he was AWOL. What if Professor Gates was staging a break-in of his own home?
Professor Gates stated on national TV that he owns priceless art and artifacts. Did Officer Crowley spoil the plan? Who knows?

Living in the Boston area, I have been subjected to more of this particular incident than I would have liked. From all accounts it would seem like Professor Gates’ extreme over-reaction caused the Cambridge police officer to over-react. These are difficult times for a lot of people for a lot of reasons and these types of things are going to happen. I understand that the story has legs and that the media is going to run with it. I support the president and his efforts to change this country and possibly the world for the better. I do however believe that his word choice on national TV was inappropriate and by using the word “stupidly” he probably lost some of the support that he was trying to gain on an important issue for everyone in this country. Not knowing all the facts of the case, it would have been wise of President Obama to keep his eye on the ball instead of supporting a friend on his word. Healthcare reform is a critical issue and I hope that Professor Gates and the President have not set the stage for the delay of a bill that could help millions of Americans. The President, over the last six months has shown us that he is willing to say he is sorry when a wrong has been committed by our country. I am confident that he will be willing to say he is sorry to the Cambridge Police Department for his choice of words last night. This is not a time to pull a George Bush and act like it never happened.

some people must belittle the police at every opportunity, including obama, he was not born in the u.s. and should be impeached immediately before he ruins the nation acccording to a black politition. let the complete truth come out, and lets see who is the racist. obama reads a good speech that i dont agree with and everyone else is waking up to his bad judgments, listening to the democrats and handling the wild spending wrongly.

I think Obama called it liked he seen it. It’s so many racist policeman here in the USA the racial profiling have been going on for years after gates ID was shown the cop should have just left. The neighbor that call the police seem to methat if you have a neighbor you would a least know how he look. We have more problems than need to be solve in this world look at the mayors and the rabbis that sold body parts for money focus on all these DEMONS and not on Obama futhermore why would the news reporter ask the question when the President news conference was about health care.

This was not a racial situation. Police are generally insecure people who become policemen to exercise power over others. They will not tolerate indignation or what they perceive as discourtesy, from anyone, white or black. They demand humility. Non-policemen encountering anger will walkaway, muttering under their breath. A cop will arrest you for it. A white who pops off at a cop and is arrested for it has no recourse. Gates can claim a special privilege to be indignant because he is black.

Gates can claim a special privilege to be indignant because he is black. You can say that again!!! Sad but VERY true.
