Stellenbosch. Beautiful. Murderous.

By Jackie May | 30 June 2009

Here I am in the most beautiful place enjoying having my senses soothed by the soft greenery, mountainous views and European-like village life. It’s magnificent. That is if you ignore the front page story of the local paper, Eikestadnuus, which claims that 18 people have died in the past 15 weeks. They are unrelated murders. A touch of madness behind the veneer.

Useful management training

By Jackie May | 26 June 2009

It is management training I’ve always needed. I realised this yesterday when I walked into a training session I thought was Internet training I’ve been expecting. I ran out as soon as I realised it was for management , and rushed down to the coffee bar. But before I had a chance to remember that I’ve given up coffee, I was called back and told that I was indeed expected for management training.
“I don’t manage anybody”, I said defiantly, “I’m on own and I like it that way”.
Ignoring my solitary status, the organisers persuaded me to stay. “There will be muffins and tea at half-time”, I was told. So I sat down, warming to the idea of a morning of doodling, daydreaming, and a muffin. Read More…

Me, Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett

By Jackie May | 26 June 2009

Today we’re in mourning. Two icons from my youth have died. I won’t miss Michael Jackson personally. I’ll have his music forever and brilliant music videos. (His recent news appearances haven’t been inspiring – we won’t miss those.)
It’s my youth I’m missing. I grew up with Michael Jackson’s music. And Farrah Fawcett was my Charlie’s Angel, not Cameron Diaz.
Read Andrew Sullivan’s thoughtful piece on the musical genius here.

Atheist bus goes to New York

By Jackie May | 25 June 2009

atheist480
Last year the Atheist Bus campaign was in London and it’s now moved to New York – and will be officially launched on Saturday. In London the campaign was a response to one by a Christian group whose message warned that non-believers would “spend all eternity in torment.”

Stolen kisses. An Iranian revolution or a bored repressed youth

By Jackie May | 25 June 2009

42-15501042

A colleague sent me this fascinating read. It’s a book review of Pardis Mahdavi’s book Passionate Uprisings: Iran’s Sexual Revolution. In the book Mahdavi describes the sexual lives of young upper-middle-class heterosexual Tehranis. They are interested in sex and have lots of it in spite of the conservative repressive state’s laws against sex before marriage.
Mahdavi implies that something major is happening. She says, according to this review, that the antics of the youth are a political act: an act that will ultimately bring about regime change.
But is it right to make this connection? Will a sexually active youth lead to regime change? Is the rich youth in Tehran not behaving as youth all over the world wish to behave. How political is this movement?

It’s a good start to regime change, I would say. A dissatisfied youth challenging the state’s repressive laws by having sex liberally is change. And I imagine these young people when they settle down will wish more rights and freedoms for their own children than what they currently have. Not only sexual freedoms.

Nixon. Mixed race abortions

By Jackie May | 24 June 2009

New recordings made public yesterday from Nixon’s presidency included his reaction to Roe vs. Wade. In conversation with an aide Chuck Colson, Nixon says:
“There are times when abortions are necessary — I know that. . . . Suppose you have a black and a white, or a rape.”
And what would have happened to Barack Obama?

Sarah Jessica Parker has twin daughters

By Jackie May | 24 June 2009

Sarah Jessica Parker and her actor husband Matthew Broderick’s twin daughters were born on Monday. They announced (via their publicist) that the surrogate mother had given birth to twin daughters and that the girls were named Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge.

“The babies are doing beautifully and the entire family is over the moon,” the couple said in a statement.

Sweet.
