I forgot about it. It didn’t cross my mind once. But it so happened that I was without power last night. We spent the weekend on a farm without electricity. We watched the stars, made a fire, and had a few glasses of wine. Perfect.
The World Wildlife Fund said today that “The world said yes to climate action, now governments must follow.” After hundreds of millions of people, time zone by time zone, in nearly 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries dimmed nonessential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m, WWF said that this was “the world’s first-ever global vote about the future of our planet.”In a statement, Kim Carstensen, the leader of WWF’s Global Climate Initiative said: “Last night’s message from the masses was loud and clear: Delay no more, real action now!”
And here Eskom says that we saved about 400 megawatts during Earth Hour. This means that 4.7million 60 watt lightbulbs were switched off .
Sapa reports that:
In Melville, Johannesburg a few restaurants opted for candlelight.
The Johannesburg skyline looked decidedly dimmer, although the Vodacom advert on top of the Ponte tower still flashed merrily.

Norm G Smith, you are such a “doos”. You and your ilk are the ones who advocate the deliberate plundering of the Earth’s scare resources and the killing off of our planet. What a damned idiot….
Norm G. Smith you damn twat. It’s pathetic idiots like you who don’t care about anything but yourselves. You can clearly see the weather is changing at a rapid pace. You’re like the idiots who say screw voting it won’t change anything. Obviously it won’t if everyone like you don’t do anything. Freaking TWAT!!!
Regardless of what you think, Norman Whoever you are, whether humans can effectthe climate or not, you are an ***. The fact that you are so willing to rebel against a worldly cause is terrible. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, yes, but what you have stated is shocking. You have clearly shown that you are selfish. Leaving your lights on and your ‘hummer’ (what are you trying to say here, nobody gives a damn about the car you drive you superficial idiot) just shows exactly the kind of people that mess up everything. I am not a tofu eating tree hugger, (you so sarcasticly liked to mention the prejudiced view of people who actually care…) but I am still cautious about the way I live my life. You cant put that ‘tofu’ sign on your opinion. The whole world (apart from arrogant ******** like yourself) joined together on Saturday to raise awareness. regardless of your point of view on the climate change, why not join in just for the sake of the country? Really i think you need to get rid of the hummer and think of other, more important things. While child slaves are working in the feilds you are driving around, leaving your lights on and not giving a continental about anyone else but yourself. Get real, this is not your earth, you share it with billions of people.
Norm G Smith, you poor man! Your average 10yr old can cherry pick articles from Wikipedia and interpret them to fit their own opinions. If that article, with its self-confessed “rough and quasi-global” statistics, is what you base your arguments on, then it is you who is ignorant, simple and misinformed, and for that I pity you.
I think your need to justify your gluttonous and rapacious lifestyle far outweighs your desire for a balanced understanding of what is an extremely complex scientific field. Anyone with a passing knowledge of history knows that climate has been constantly changing, so that is no news flash!
Anthropogenic climate change is at the very least a strong possibility (an ant may be harmless but what do you think 6 billion hungry red-ants would do to you?), if not scientific fact. The earth will survive, and given a few millennia it may even recover, but the species that depend on its resources now, will NOT survive if we carry on as we are.
Have you ever thought about how much natural resources went into manufacturing that ridiculous Hummer of yours, let alone running it?! We are within a few short years of running out of some of our most valuable resources, like fresh water. What is left will be too contaminated by mining and industry (for your Hummer) for human consumption. Climate change aside, surely that is reason enough to stop spending just for the sake of making a statement and embarrassing yourself.
A lot of name-calling and anger because someone chooses not to participate in an event designed to increase public fear about the “global warming” hoax. And because I showed scientific proof that the climate is always warming or cooling naturally. Looks like some people forgot their St. Johns Wort herbal relaxer tea.
Sure – we had a few hot years, but now we are entering into a natural global-cooling phase. The most under-reported story of the century was Nasa’s press release of Sept 23, 2008.
see: http://www.science.nasa.gov/he.....arwind.htm
According to Nasa the Sun’s output is suddenly losing power and it is already “13 cooler”. This is hard science (like the climate history graph I posted above)and not a bogus computer-model like Al Gore’s sheeple rely on. Where I live – BC, Canada – we have had record cold and record snowpacks for several years.
To learn more about global cooling and what the real scientists are saying see the Ice Age Now website. I mean really read some of the news stories and opinions by impartial climatologists. Open your mind. Get past thinking you can watch one DVD by one person, presenting one side of a debate and call yourself an expert.
Al Gore, by the way, is Chairman of the For-Profit Generation Investment Management, which has huge holdings in “carbon trading” corporations. He has refused to debate any of the huge and growing number of climate scientists who do not believe humans caused global warming. What’s he afraid of?
Don’t trust the IPCC either. They are a special interest group on the “research grant” gravy train enjoying lavish vacations in Bali and Copenhagen on the taxpayers dime.
And here is one more scientific chart you can ponder while you sip your soy milk: http://www.globalwarmingart.co.....re_Rev_png
It shows that our current interglacial (Holocene) is the coldest interglacial recorded in the past 450,000 years. It also shows the interglacial is almost over. They only last about 11,500 years.
Keep it real!
“Peace and Love”
You single-minded, misguided fool! If you’re going to spend so much energy finding **** to spout off about then try make it about something worthwhile. Try a GOOD cause, like HIV/Aids – or is that too distasteful to you? At the moment you are campaigning for doing NOTHING – you are living your insignificant life for NOTHING. How do you feel about that?
You’re right, the earth is in a natural cooling phase, and the sun is cooling… so why then are global (there is a whole world out there and it’s not called CANADA) temperatures still soaring!?! It’s something called greenhouse gases and they teach you about it in school. Perhaps you need to step out of your little snow-padded bubble and find out what’s happening in the rest of the world before you make your prejudiced conclusions based on partial science.
A couple of points to show just how blinkered you are to what’s really happening:
- You take the FACT that nearly 1 billion people (that’s a hundred million) signed up to the Earth Hour initiative as “proof” that public opinion on global warming is dwindling! Duh.
- You have completely ignored the issue of finite (that means they will run out) natural resources and continue to throw pointless scientific proof that doesn’t disprove anything.
Everything is connected – no man, no species and no system is an island!
PS: Who the hell is Al Gore anyway?! Sounds like an American politician so that’s probably why I don’t know him.
Norm G. Smith. If your facts are so straight and your science so real why the sarcasm and spite about the whole thing in the first place? Also, why do you need to humiliate Al Gore and others. You do not realize how this completely undermines your own credibility.
Debate presupposes at least commitment to your point to persuade others. Belittlement of and scorn for the other’s point does not.
Norn, I’m afraid you have misinterpreted the information in your links to back up an arduous argument. May I suggest that you do more research before you make up your mind on this issue. You obviously get most of your info from popular science sites, so maybe start here: http://www.newscientist.com/ar.....ntury.html
Thanks RS – I have been studying climate science for many years. I started out being fooled by Gore’s movie – then I started to dig deeper.
I am in very good company. This is a full page newspaper ad you will be seeing soon: http://www.cato.org/special/cl.....limate.pdf
Try http://www.iceagenow.com for the latest news (from many sources) on the current global cooling, growing glaciers, record low temps, etc.
Norm G. Smith
March 30, 2009 at 2:23 amThis whole thing was just a thinly veiled tribute to Al Gore and his sheeple. Fortunately, the average city experienced a drop of only 2% in electricity consumption. This is further proof that the pendulum of public opinion is swinging away from “global warming” alarmism.
I turned all my lights on, and I turned on most of my appliances, and I set the tile floor heater to Max. I also left my Hummer idling in the driveway.
Anyone who believe humans can control the climate is sadly misinformed regarding the real history of climate. Climate is never stable. Earth is always in a natural warming or cooling phase.
