Shortly after her mother, Sarah Palin was nominated to run with John McCain as his vice, the news broke that the then 17-year-old Bristol Palin was pregnant. The news created great amusement – Sarah Palin had backed abstinence-only programs when she ran for governor in 2006.
Bristol gave birth to Tripp at the end of last. On Monday night she taped an interview for Fox News Greta Van Susteren’s “On The Record”. Bristol Palin, in her first interview since giving birth, said that she would like to be an advocate against teen pregnancy. Or is it an interview with Sarah? Sarah is wonderfullly honest.
Both Bristol and her mother Sarah expressed skepticism about abstinence-only programs. Sarah Palin admitted in the interview about abstinence: “It sounds naive. Life happens.”
Bristol said that “everyone should be abstinent but it’s not realistic… [sex] is more and more accepted among kids my age.”
She also said, rather sadly that: “Of course I wish it would happen in like 10 years so I could have a job and education and my own house… But he brings so much joy. I don’t regret it at all.”

“what ever happened to bristol palin’s baby daddy?”
Ever see that SNL skit? That was hilarious.
I am continually amazed at how silly people can be. There are older women having babies that aren’t half as responsible or caring as this young woman is for her son. She as a great support system and I believe she will still accomplish the things she wants to do. God bless her for not taking the easy way out as so many teens do!
She is doing a great job! she is taking care of her son! which is something that many people who are married and everything cant and do not take care of their children! yes she is a young woman BUT she has stepped up a great deal. At least she didn’t go out and get an abortion!
The point here is that Sarah Palin’s fundamentalist, conservative politics — specifically, her stance against women’s reproductive rights, contraceptives and *** education — worked against her daughter, her family and her candidacy.
Palin’s daughter says in the interview that she wishes she had not become pregnant for another 10 years. Since she was clearly not practicing safe ***, it is fair to assume she had not learned to do so. She even admits that she was fearful of her parents’ reaction and couldn’t tell them she was pregnant, which speaks volumes for the treatment (or lack thereof) of the delicate issue of *** in her family, community, church and school.
All of this has little to do with whether one supports reproductive rights. But it is cause to question the merit of those who espouse the hard-line positions on *** education, abstinence and contraception that Palin has.
Thanks for this!
It’s almost surreal to hear them discussing the teensy-weensy downside to abstinence-only. It’s also kind of sad to watch Bristol speak wistfully of the things she could have done had she not had the baby.

{Bristol said that “everyone should be abstinent but it’s not realistic… [***] is more and more accepted among kids my age.”}
No it is not realistic and the sexual drive is God given. The Palins failed their daughter by not providing *** education and/or birth control if she needed it. Of course, she does not regret her son. Who does once they are born?
Abstinence is not realistic? What the heck, though I do agree the urge to have this is God given and guess what, it works for what it was designed to do, which is make babies!
gee, something that works, well, just cuz it “feels good” and “everyone is doing it” we might as well try to fix this whole “have ***, make a kid” thing so it suits our purposes better.
what about just NOT having *** unless you’re in a committed and mature relationship?
would’ve liked to have that kid 10 years from now, maybe you should have said no for 10 more years to hockey boy.
naive, just cuz you have a kid doesn’t make you an expert mother
Sarah pretty much failed the first two kids, hope the next 3 do better RE: pregnancies, malicious mischeif, education.
It’s understandable that some critics of the Left think we progressives have an unhealthy hatred/fascination with the Palin family. And certainly, the children of former vice-presidential candidates are off-limits…
…except when they are willingly interviewed by Greta Van Susteren at FOX News. Sigh, the Palin Reputation Recovery Tour is obviously fully booked through the Iowa Caucuses on December 20, 2011.
But the big “news” of the interview is that, gasp, Bristol Palin thinks “everyone should be abstinent but it’s not realistic… [***] is more and more accepted among kids my age.”
Wasn’t it one news cycle ago that the Minority Leader of the Senate thinks it will, ahem, play well with his base to remove contraception/AIDS prevention programs from the stimulus package?
Why does it bear repeating that the entire Republican Party is completely out of touch with reality?
Add: (Nicole) Interesting that Grandma Sarah didn’t want Bristol to have too much time alone in the spotlight, and made an “unexpected” call on Bristol and Greta, bringing baby Tripp with her. Her response to Bristol’s comments on abstinence-only education not being realistic? “Life happens”
Brilliant.
she has been a mother for 2 months and all she can is “it’s awesome, I love being a mom, its so rewarding” — she is still a child herself!!!
Listening to her kind of makes me sad. Haha. Really, she was 17, she could have been responsible enough to go out and prevent this from happening. =]
Marc Maron’s thoughtful analysis on the Bristol Palin interview conducted by FOX News:
Sam
February 17, 2009 at 7:01 pmi don’t bewlieve you can prove your statement “Sarah Palin had backed abstinence-only programs when she ran for governor in 2006.”
Her point was that regardless of your opinion about premarital ***, how you deal with the consequences of a pregnancy is most important.
