In the UK last month, an immunisation expert, Dr Mary Ramsay, said that there is currently “a real risk of a large measles epidemic”. More than a thousand cases of measles were reported in the UK during the first 10 months of this year. The reason, of course, is that parents are not vaccinating their children because of the autism scare caused by Dr Andrew Wakefield suggesting that there is a link between the MMR vaccine and an increased risk of autism and bowel disorders. His research was disapproved earlier this year when a team from London’s Guy’s and St Thomas’s hospitals found no evidence to link MMR to autism.
But here is another, more plausible scare: without the correct information your child can die from MMR. According to his parents, the death of a little 18-month old boy, George Fisher, could have been prevented with more information about the MMR vaccination. The Guardian reported today that:
George Fisher, who was 18 months old, was discovered dead in his cot in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire by his mother Sarah Fisher ten days after being given the MMR jab in January 2006, a coroner was told.
George suffered from febrile convulsions – fits caused by high temperatures – and Mrs Fisher, 44, and husband Christopher, 43, believe the vaccine was “implicated” in their son’s death.
They say the temperature-raising effects of the drug on children who have suffered febrile convulsions were not explained to them, adding that this knowledge might have allowed them to act sooner.
PS: I vaccinate.
