In an article on New York Times today, the reporter remembers a passage from Audacity of Hope where Obama recalls meeting Bush:
“Obama!” Bush exclaimed… “Come here and meet Laura. Laura, you remember Obama. We saw him on TV during election night. Beautiful family. And that wife of yours — that’s one impressive lady.”
The two men shook hands and then, according to Obama, Bush turned to an aide, “who squirted a big dollop of hand sanitizer in the president’s hand.”
Bush then offered some to Obama, who recalled: “Not wanting to seem unhygienic, I took a squirt.”
Gawker.com asks “was this odd behavior a racist thing, a partisan thing or an insane president thing?”
Apparently Fox News later asked the president about this passage, and Bush got very irritated.
Eish!

This is common in the UK? I wasn’t aware. I doubt very much that it would be good manners to do this after shaking anyone’s hand, including ET’s. If this is true, it is unbelievable.
I have lived in the UK on and off for the last 20 years and I have never heard of people doing this – but then I have never mixed in the corporate world – seems very strange and quite rude. I wash my hands when I arrive somewhere or get home or before I eat but certainly not after shaking someones hands!
Using hand sanitizer after shaking the hand of a guest in your presence, is not considered good santitation practice. It is considered very impolite, ill-mannered and rude. Busch’s using non-verbal communication to imply the hands of Obama are not clean enough for him to touch. If I were Obama I would have not taken a squirt. I would have looked at Busch like he lost his mind!
Some people clean their noses with their fingers while having a face to face conversation. These same people will prefer to pull the mucus from a stuffy sinus towards their gullet, and frown upon others who use a tissue to blow their nose as if this is disgusting. Whats the big deal?
No big deal here. A president can’t afford to get sick and many germs are transmitted by hands. Trying to make this a race issue is ridiculous. How about first verifying that he does this consistently?
i really doubt this, however, if it is true, then, perhaps bush see something that we all don’t see. or should i say, he’s bringing back the rascism mentality.
shall we also say, he is trying to remove his hand in Obama’s elect as pontius pilate did in the presence of the whole nation when they refuse on crucifying christ to show that he doesn’t have hands in such.
perhaps, bush has a question to answer. this is indeed stupidity.
Petty, petty, petty!
Listen up everyone before you all get bent out of shape over nothing.
This was NOT racism!
This was at an event with a lot of people where politicians — such as Bush and Obama — have to shake a lot of hands. To keep from contracting colds and other minor ailments caused by the transmitting of germs through handshaking, many politicians will use hand sanitizer to kill the germs.
Comprende, so far?
So, Bush did not sanitize his hands because he had just shaken the hand of now President-elect Obama, it was out of habit.
Obama said it as much in his book (but that part was “somehow” omitted from the quote above.”
I think we should not have been crying RACISM RACISM RACISM if we had learned SOVEREIGNTY. Why should we the so called black race always want to get included into the so called whiteness? I still do not understand this!!!! Come on people, if we had reclaimed our sovereignty, this RACISM illusion would not exist. Beside, I will let but SUCK my **** in my self determination.
Who cares if the DEAD EVIL CORPSE sanitize ITS evil hands? That corpses should be sent to the grave.
Obama sucks WHITE AZZ in order to inherite the commander in chief of evil.
The last time I checked, sterilization did not lead to good health. furthermore, only decomposing corpses are always sanitize so that it can stay longer. No wonder such frequent sanitation have to take place.
dead corpses.
It does not seem so odd when you consider that the queen wears gloves so her subjects don’t contaminate her!
The obvious issue here is it is such an unusual action to take, or it was taken out of context.
I remember being introduced to the soccer star John Barnes and i hesitated to shake his hand because my right hand was greasy after chomping on spare ribs. (Growing up in a community were offering the left hand would have been a bigger insult as it is the toilet hand!). John said his hand had been doing same and we shook. Not only did it break the ice, it also showed how unpretentious and normal he was, at a time in his life when he was truly iconic, i have had the utmost respect for him since, though I normally stay clear of the rich and famous as they tend to be very insecure and emotionally immature..
Even though i wanted to clean before shaking, Bush and Obama may well have done same as Barnsey and I, and cleansed after the introductions.
What Bush did was unusual enough to have warranted a mention if it had been something he did with all persons, as a way of mimicking his ‘wannabee’ status as royalty. After all he is unintelligent, inarticulate and forever in the shadow of his more infamous warmongering General of a father.
I read in a black UK news paper that Bush & Obama are related, probably in reference to his white American mother!
That Bin Ladens family are close business associates of the Bush dynasty and his infamy (no longer being hunted as top priority enemy no 1!) has died off as quickly as the Aids fiasco of the 80’s!
So what are we meant to believe?

November 10, 2008 at 3:21 pmI know that this practice is very common overseas, especially in the corporate world of the UK.
Even though this is counter-culture for us as Africans, it is rude in my book to do this in front of your guest or host. But then again, Bush has always been an idiot.
