Michelle Cottle in The New Republic says that the McCain campaign must be wondering why they hired Sarah Palin.
‘The governor obviously possesses raw political talent: She delivers a mean speech. She comes across as likeable, down-to-earth, spunky, expressive. She can convey confidence and certainty even when she has no idea what she’s talking about, and she can shiv an opponent while flashing the sort of dazzling smile that has allowed pretty women to get away with murder for millennia.
‘But on occasion, when you squeeze her in just the right way, Palin doesn’t just fold; she falls apart, babbling nonsensical non-sentences that prompt nasty quips about whether the former Pentecostal is speaking in tongues. At this point, even if Palin is sleeping well at night, it’s unlikely anyone else on Team McCain can say the same.’
Here’s the transcript. But you’ve got to watch the above video to feel the cringe:
COURIC (to Palin): Do you think there’s an inherent right to privacy in the Constitution?
PALIN: I do. Yeah, I do.
COURIC: the cornerstone of Roe v Wade
PALIN: I do. And I believe that –individual states can handle what the people within the different constituencies in the 50 states would like to see their will ushered in in an issue like that.
COURIC: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?
PALIN: Well, let’s see. There’s –of course –in the great history of America rulings there have been rulings, that’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are–those issues, again, like Roe v Wade where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know–going through the history of America, there would be others but–
COURIC: Can you think of any?
PALIN: Well, I could think of–of any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a Vice President, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.

She utilizes the art of the Non-Answer. Dancing around it because she can’t answer directly. Which worked well for her in Alaska. But I don’t think the rest of America will fall for her B.S answers.
I think that Palin is not versed on how to deal with the national reporting style. Palin seems to not know right of the top of her head the Supreme Court decisions, but her biggest problem is that she really is trying to answer the question and accepts the premise of the questions thrown at her uncritically. She needs some training on how to cope with the question style of the national media. Palin is not being considered to be US Attorney General. Also, the format of the questions is already setting her up with a substantial expectation of failure. “What OTHER Sup Ct Decisions do you disagree with? A negative framework. Then, it becomes like a quizz. Biden made a mistake on when TV and presidents and national financial crisis appeared together in our history; now, that is a big one, but he is not being quizzed about what other historical dates, financial crises or presidential addresses to the nation he remembers. I find the set up childish. I would like to hear from Sarah. I mean I find it hard to accept uncritically that she, with all her success as a public leader, she can allow Katie Couric’s questions to make her appear so nervous and unsure. I must say that I observed that when there is a high expectation of failure, a constant rejection of a persons skills and what he or she represents, and then thrown into a room with the doubters and the doubters are in charge, even the most self confident people crumble a bit. Sarah should go into these interviews with the expectation that no question is innocent and no allow her self to be treated like a five year old and given quizzes about court cases nor accept the premises of questions so willingly. Sarah wants to please Katie. IN this she is soo stereotypically female. Interesting given that she is a leader that combines traditional femininity with masculine traits. I wish her the best even if I may not vote for her and even if she doesn’t know all the Supreme Court cases that relevant today. She is a fresh face, has shown guts and conviction. I disagree with her party on most everything, but I root for her and her compelling personal biography. Get it together Sarah!
Can’t think of any other Supreme Court cases? Isn’t every kid taught Brown v. Board of Education? Or is she pro-segregation too?
Lola, what are you talking about? You can check side by side the transcripts of Palin and Biden answering the same set of questions (Roe v. Wade, disagreement with supreme court decisions etc.). The dramatic difference in knowledge and intelligence can’t be made up by a few days’ crash lessons, or a 1929 TV gaffe that’s used again and again (while Palin is serving fresh new jokes nightly).
What I see, frankly, is blind ambition, thinly veiled and now exposed for all the world to see. Power is an aphrodisiac for men as well as women.
Wanting to be VP is not readiness for the position. I think her idea of holding the power in a pen has overrun any sensibility of being responsible and accountable for the decisions she makes, and most of them seem based on her own personal beliefs, as narrow as they are.
To be in the position of VP means to be ready to assume the presidency. She is clearly not ready for either job.
Well, its not Sarah’s fault. She never intended to come to the main stream politics at this time. May be she could later into the picture after gaining some experience and knowledge. McCain thought that if Obama could do it (with less experience), why not Sarah and that’s where he was wrong. Now its tool late for McCain to change his running mate, so he has to go with her and see what happens. May be they should call the same witch hunter they used before she became the governor and he might be able to help. But Sarah is a unique personality who can be the future leader of the GOP.
PALIN
P is for the pathetic excuses her supporters make for her.
A is for the answers she cannot seem to give
L is for the lobotomy McCain needs for picking her
I is for the issues she’s clueless about
N if for the nation she’ll lead astray, if elected
Sam,
She entered into this political campaign of her own free will. No one forced her. If she was smart she would have recognized her own shortcomings and declined the nomination. By giving her a pass all you do is belittle all of the people that *are* competent but who were ignored because they don’t have a rack and good skin.
Lady Liberty………Thank you. This says it ALL

Did Carl Rove put Palin up to looking bad in the Couric interview so she would look good, by comparison, in the debate?

October 2, 2008 at 2:30 pmSqueeze her? You see, you see… she’s right about sexism in this campaign.
PS: So what if she doesn’t know anything about the economy. She has great skin. And that’s not sexist.
