The Polls: trick or treat?

By Jackie May | 31 October 2008

I hoped tonight, after some fairly wild trick and treating in my Johannesburg neighbourhood, that the polls would treat me to some calm.

And with just 3 days and 7 hours before Super Tuesday, it’s looking good:

Real Clear Politics indicate that Obama is leading on 11 polls and that the RCP average has him leading 49.9 points to McCain’s 43.5. Read More…

Obama’s TV ratings: infomercial and The Daily Show

By Jackie May | 31 October 2008

The Hollywood Reporter has suggested that if Obama doesn’t win the presidency, he should be hired by TV broadcasters. Not a bad idea at all.

Obama’s appearance on The Daily Show pulled in the series’ highest ever rating on Wednesday night: 3.6 million viewers in the US.

The Guardian reports that the 30-minute infomercial on the same night, (aired on CBS, NBC, Fox, and 4 other channels) was watched by 33.6 million viewers. Normally the seven channels’ combined viewer average for the prime time slot is 30.3 million.

Wednesday night’s The Daily show beat the show’s previous high when the Democrat presidential candidate’s wife Michelle appeared on October 8 by 600,000 viewers.

Palin is ‘the disasta’ from Alaska’

By Jackie May | 31 October 2008

Not only are a growing number of voters saying that Sarah Palin is not qualified to be vice president, a former Republican Secretary of State and one of John McCain’s most prominent supporters ‘offered a stunningly frank and remarkably bleak assessment of her capacity to handle the presidency should such a scenario arise.’

Lawrence Eagleburger said on Thursday that the Alaska governor is not only unprepared to take over the job on a moment’s notice but, even after some time in office, would only amount to an “adequate” commander in chief.

“And I devoutly hope that [she] would never be tested,” he added.

According to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll 59 percent of voters surveyed said Palin was not prepared for the job, up nine percentage points since the beginning of the month.

Obama is still in the lead, with 51 percent of likely voters supporting him and 40 percent supporting McCain.

The Hollywood Reporter on Obama’s half-hour infomerical:

“If Barack Obama fails to win the election, perhaps the networks should hire him to entertain viewers on Wednesday nights.”

Rashid Khalidi and the videotape

By Jackie May | 31 October 2008

Some of the comments on my post ’Rashid Khalidi and Obama’ are disturbing. Others are very interesting and some, rightly call for the release of the videotape.

Here’s a comment from, Amy, an ex student of Rashid Khalidi:

The first I heard of the association by donation of John McCain with Rashid Khalidi, I was quite interested. When I started to hear accusations that Professor Khalidi –a graduate of Oxford University, once a distinguished and tenured professor of Near East History at the University of Chicago and now Director of the Middle East Institute at Columbia, three of the finest insitutions of learning in the entire world — was “anti-semitic” I was outraged and concerned. Professor Khalidi was my professor at the University of Chicago where I majored in Near Eastern History. He was an inspiring and captivating lecturer and an outstanding mentor. Read More…

Roger Cohen’s American Stories

By Jackie May | 31 October 2008

Read Roger Cohen’s column in the New York Times. He explains why a ‘handful of words’ have reverberated in his mind. The words were spoken by Obama in Illinois in February 2007: “For as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on earth is my story even possible.”

The good news about pregnancy and drinking

By Jackie May | 31 October 2008

About a year ago, when my foetus was about 7 months, the Times of London splashed with a story on pregnancy and drinking. The UK government had issued a warning about drinking while pregnant: don’t drink at all, was the advice the paper offered.

I had been drinking lightly during the first two trimesters of my third pregnancy as I had done throughout my first two.  After reading this news, I felt terrible and so guilty. So I avoided alcohol for the remainder of that pregnancy.

But today there is good news, also reported on the Times of London:

Women who drink alcohol occasionally during pregnancy do not harm their unborn babies – in fact their children may even benefit, a large study suggests.

Research involving more than 12,000 children showed that mothers who drank lightly during pregnancy – defined as one to two units, or a single drink a week – did not increase the risk of having babies with mental impairment or behavioural problems.

Rather, children born to light drinkers were found to be less likely to have problems and peformed better in some tests compared with offspring of mothers who did not drink at all.

The findings run counter to government guidance, which advises pregnant women and those trying to conceive to cut out alcohol altogether.

Barack and Khalidi: a Zionist responds

By Jackie May | 30 October 2008

Martin Peretz, the Israel-based editor of The New Republic, and a man who is to Zionists what Sarah Palin is to moose-shooting anti-abortionists, says ‘I have written more appreciative words about Khalidi than Obama ever uttered. In fact, I even invited Khalidi to speak for a Jewish organization with which I work.’

News from the Canadian Alaskan border

By Jackie May | 30 October 2008

My fellow blogger, The Frock Report sent this to me:
From the MANITOBA HERALD, Canada: Liberals sneak into Canada

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration.

The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they’ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O’Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it’s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. Read More…
