The News of the World, yesterday, published extracts from Kate McCann’s diary. A Portuguese reporter, who was ‘sickened by the smear campaign against the McCanns’, gave the British newspaper the journal. It is a personal recording of Kate’s days from April 28, 2007 to Tuesday, July 31.

Kate’s entry on May 3, 2007, the day Madeleine disappeared is heartbreaking. It describes such a familiar day. A day of looking after children. Feeding them, reading to them, getting them to bed and then doing some grown-up stuff too. Here are a few entries (go to News of the World for more from Kate’s diary):

THURSDAY, MAY 3: Milk and biscuits for the kids. I left them with this and books and games and went to have a quick shower/wash my hair. M (Madeleine) tired—sitting on my lap—I read the story of Mog (favourite children’s book).

Brush teeth. To the bedroom with the kids. M pulls away and puts her head on pillow. Kisses goodnight for M. Pulled the door to as far as possible without shutting it. Silence.

Dry hair. Put make-up on. Glass of wine. Restaurant.

‘FRIDAY, MAY 4: No sleep, Gerry and I started looking through the streets around 06.00 as it was starting to get light. Nobody around. Why not? Desperate.

Minutes seem like hours. Outside of the apartments masses of people asking questions about that night and for descriptions of Madeleine. Long day.

(Then Kate, Gerrry and their seven friends were taken to the Policia Judiciaria, or PJ, headquarters in nearby Portimao to give statements.)

Nobody from the police introduced themselves. Nobody offered us a drink or food. All the police dressed informally and smoking. No sympathy was shown and far from inspiring.

I believe my statement would have been around 15.00 and such. They allowed G (Gerry) to come in with me but seated behind me. Translator present.

The police officer who took us by car to the station was the one asking the questions and afterwards typed the answers on a typewriter. Morose.

We left the police station around 7.30pm to 8pm. After 15 minutes we received a call from the PJ saying we had to go back but they didn’t tell us why. We turned around and flew back at around 200 kilometres an hour. Once again frightening. Did they find her? Please God. Is she dead? Prayers. We arrived—they showed us a photo of a girl they’d forgotten to show us from the close circuit TV footage. Not M. Devastating.

SATURDAY, MAY 12: (Madeleine’s birthday) Madeleine is four years old. Day at resort with holiday group. Special Mass for Madeleine at 18.00 in Praia da Luz. ‘

She is so guilty. She even says god bring her back after she talks about her being dead in the diary.

YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. You only have to listen and look at them to know they are not guilty. Tell me how they would hide her body. and then move it in front of the whole world. Perhaps you think they are related to Houdini!!!!

How can anybody be the judge about whether Kate or Gerry are guilty or not when there is no evidence to suggest it.

Sure, people think they might be guilty of killing their own little girl and hiding her somewhere, but remember the saying innocent until proven guilty?

Whatever your own opinions or thoughts about what has happened, who took Madeleine and why they took her, why don’t you let the family get on with things. If you have nothing constructive or supportive to say then don’t say it at all. Losing a child is something I could not imagine – the pain they must still be feeling must be indescribable, and they do not need ignorant idiots to blame them for this hideous crime.

Kate and Gerry – I really do hope that you are one day reunited with your little girl. My thoughts are with you,

i don’t believe that any one would write in a diary on the day after his or her child went missing.

People who write in diaries or write in journals do so as a means of maintaining a sense of control over their lives. I believe that Kate would have continued to do so just so she could stay grounded in those very trying times. Also, she needed a private place to say what was in her heart! Please have some compassion for this family and focus your energy on finding Madeleine, keeping the children of your community safe, and avoid the temptation to be both judge and jury when even the most skilled jurist could not make a determination of guilt based on what has been released to the public. Who can possibly separate truth from fiction in this case. Until then, innocent until proven guilty must be held for everyone because if it isn’t, then no one is safe!

FYI: Kate did not write the inital parts published. They have been added from statements she gave regarding events leading up to Madeleine’s abduction. She began the journal shortly after Madeleine’s birthday – it was a therapeutic exercise to help her cope with the trauma and pain. Also, please do not read too much into some of the wording and expressions used – the journal was translated from English to Portuguese, then translated back to English for the purpose of publication in the News of the World – some of the content has been somewhat distorted and lost in translation.

it stated she left a 3 year old and 2 under twos alone while she had a bath ( in a tiled appt)and then puts her make up on before heading out leaving them alone and out of sight, knowing full well that they had woken up in distress on previous nights. Then she asks where is everyone out looking for her daughter. Why was she or Gerry not out looking for their daughter. Clear case of child neglect in my opinion.

I’ve followed this case from May onward. This mother is guilty of harming her child this is a case of child abuse. Infanticide and if you look closely it’s all there for the world to see; on tape. The dots hitting all over Kate is the most damning evidence, but more telling is her behavior on film. The Tanning, the Shopping, the Matching clothing, the photo ops, the behavior is of a couple, desperate to save themselves from a murder charge. And that IS ALL it is. Nothing less nothing More. Madel is never coming back, she died in that flat that night when Kate lashed out at her.
Watch ALL the videos related to this tape. Its very plain for anyone with an ounce of Law Enforcement background to see. She Is Lying, and her husband will go to any lengths to try to “protect” all he’s worked for in his hard life.

NOT GUILTY,
Mrs Mccann and Mr Mccann were parents who made a big mistake with their children, I too watched this all unfold since last May, they tried to stay composed and were told to so not show emotion by pyschologists.I am a mother and as i can see all this family has gone to Hell and back, saddest of all is my sadness for little Madeliene what she is enduring or endured.I hope they find her preferably alive, if not they need their little girl back and need closure to this.I hope this will happens soon.God bless all who are looking for her and God bless and protect Madeliene

How many parents let their children play in the back yard? That is how far the McCanns were from their kids that night. They could see the front door to their hotel room from the restaurant. How many children have been abducted from their own homes while their parents were in another room? Give it a rest folks. There is no way the McCanns could have killed that child and hid her body without being seen. They had no motive.

I suppose you all think the world trade center was blown up by President Bush too. LOL

A few comments: First, this could not be compared to letting your children play in the back yard, in my opinion. Second, I have to agree with anyone who states that these parents were neglectful, I have 5 daughters and have taken them all on holiday over the years, but never left them alone in an apartment. If we went out to eat, we took them with us. Third, I would like to ask Marnie where she gets the information from…”FYI: Kate did not write the inital parts published. They have been added from statements she gave regarding events leading up to Madeleine’s abduction. She began the journal shortly after Madeleine’s birthday – it was a therapeutic exercise to help her cope with the trauma and pain. Also, please do not read too much into some of the wording and expressions used – the journal was translated from English to Portuguese, then translated back to English for the purpose of publication in the News of the World – some of the content has been somewhat distorted and lost in translation”….does she know the family? Fourth, if any mum with a missing child did feel inclined to write a diary like this one, why would she include details of the way the police were dressed and the fact that they were smoking? If that were my child I would not notice what the police were wearing! Fifth, on the night of Madeleine’s disappearance she writes

“Milk and biscuits for the kids.

Restaurant.”

I wonder where Gerry was during this time? When she read the children a story, gave them milk and biscuits, took a shower, dried her hair, put on make up, brushed her teeth and tucked them into their beds, Gerry is not mentioned once, for example, “Gerry read to them while I took a shower/put on make up”. My husband and I always helped each other out in this kind of situation – if we were getting ready to go out and leave the children with a babysitter, I would read to them while he got ready, then he would settle them into bed while I got ready, or vice versa. So where was Gerry that evening?
