Is anybody else being stalked by this ad? The words ’10 rules of (a) flat stomach’ follow me wherever I go on my daily digital tours. On facebook, on news sites, on the blogs I read… Everywhere. And really, reading the words ‘flat stomach’ is no good for my morale.

I would love to attend to my stomach. I would love to do some sit-ups, stomach crunches and whatever else will help restore my stomach to a pre-baby state.

I’ve had three Caesarian sections (yes, I do live in Johannesburg!). I am incapable of doing sit-ups. Firstly, no abdominal muscles will respond to the mind’s request to lift the torso. The muscles have been ruined. Cut up. Cut through. Stretched. Whatever. Secondly, exercise requires time. Time, time, time… what a wonderfully precious commodity. The little bit of time I have to spare, I use for sleep.  Certainly not for exertion.

So my stomach for now, will remain as it is. At least, my son loves it  – he pokes it, smacks it and plays with it. It responds. It has become a toy of sorts.

But one day, I’ll find some time (really?) and muscles to work with, and the toy might disappear.
