The first clash between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran was an all-time classic

The first clash between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran was an all-time classic

Would anybody argue with the assertion that Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather jnr are the two best pound-for-pound boxers on the planet right now?

You can add further spice to that by making Manny Pacquiao the world’s best active offensive fighter, and Mayweather the best active defensive boxer. You’ve got the irresistable force against the untouchable target (one can’t call Mayweather the unmovable object).

Fans should be relishing the prospect of a match-up between these two men. Until Mayweather retired, after hammering Ricky Hatton, he was the pound-for-pound king. In his absence, that title has been usurped by Pacquiao.

How often has boxing really seen two fighters at their prime facing off? When last did pugilism see the world’s two best fighters trading blows legitimately in the same division?

Probably not since the 1980s – when Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler fought each other in a stunning series of battles. They fought, they won, they lost … and they all became legends! The winners needed the losers.

In the 1970s it was the same in the heavyweight division, with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Ken Norton all winning and losing. That’s how they became legends.

Sure, I may have overlooked some fights along the way, but in boxing it is rare to get top performers in the same weight division at the same time. Think about it, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson were past their best when they met Lennox Lewis.

Joe Louis was an old man when he got smashed by Rocky Marciano, although if you examine the damage on Marciano’s face by the end of the fight, you have to wonder what might have happened if Louis had been at his best.

More often than not, fighters are not at their peak. Bernard Hopkins was still relatively wet behind the ears when he took on Roy Jones jnr. In the 1990s we had Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Ike Quartey, Shane Mosley and Vernon Forrest, but none of them quite reached the heights of Leonard, Hearns and Duran before them (at least in my eyes).

As a mainstream sport boxing has lost much ground in the past decades. The worst thing that can happen is if the promoters and TV bosses fail to organise the Pacquiao v Mayweather showdown. Boxing needs this fight to happen.

And both Pacquiao and Mayweather need this fight. The winner will earn bragging rights as the pound-for-pound champion, but he can only do that with the other guy in the ring.

Greatness beckons both; Pacquiao and Mayweather need each other.

No. Floyd needs Pac more than Pac needs Floyd. Pac could retire today and will go down as one of the greatest while Floyd still has a questionable legacy where his opponents @ welterweight are handpicked.

Hell, Floyd should be thankful if he gets 40%.

I beg to differ, Mayweather needs Manny more than Manny needs Mayweather. At this point who’s got a title belt? Who has won 7 titles in seven weight divisions? In their last fight, who fought a more serious threat, who took more risk?

Answer to questions: Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao and Mayweather don’t “need” each other. Full Stop!

Both men can retire from the sport of boxing.

The sport of Boxing is the one that needs both Mayweather and Pacquiao.

As far as each mans legacy in boxing Pacquiao can retire without fighting anyone else and his legacy will remain intact.

Mayweather on the other hand will have his legacy in question because he will not have faced adversity in the ring which is how we define a fighter. i.e. by who he has faced in the ring..

I dont agree. How dare you compare a fraud like mayweather to the greats of the past. They are brave fighters who believed in their own abilities and proved it in the ring like Pacquiao. What has mayweather done?who has he fought?BaldomirGatti?Hatton?Marquez?see a pattern forming? He hasnt fought any TRUE welterweights in years. He REFUSE to fight Mosely,Cotto,Margarito,Williams etc etc, instead prefering to watch as these true fighters battle it out. Before he fights Pacquiao he should fight a real welter. But he wont.I dont know why you seem to think hes so great when hes not been tested,or only fought 2nd rate, small, old or slow fighters.Pacquiao shouldnt give this coward and fraud a payday. Its only fools like you who buy into mayweather claim to be P4P,well you can add his drug addict uncle and the pathetic father, making up the 3 Degrees of boxing.
While mayweather was telling everyone how great he is,Pacquiao has been proving it in the ring.Open your eyes!

A Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will certainly be the injection-in-the-arm that the sport of boxing needs right now. I’m sure Mayweather is concerned with the power, speed, and endurance that Manny possesses, but rest assured that Manny is also thinking about Floyd’s unparalleled defensive skills. If Mayweather is able to successfully stick-and-move throughout the entire fight, he will win on points. If Mayweather brings the fight to Pacquiao head-on, then Pacquiao will win according to the cards. All in all, if the fight doesn’t occur due to disagreement regarding the purse, then Pacquiao will win in the PR arena. It would look like Mayweather is purposely asking for an unfair cut in the purse, knowing that Manny will never agree to such an arrangement. The only way Mayweather comes out looking good is if he gets in the ring with Manny and beats him in front of the whole world.

AGAIN, they are the best but PACMAN IS BETTER, gayweather have to prove that he is worthy of fighting PACMAN..the coward gayweather should fight eighter mosley, margarito or cotto. His fight with Marquez does not prove anything..Pacman can retire and cement his legacy and dont need gayweather..Let gayweather have that legacy of greatness only on his world…He is not anymore important.

FLOYD NEEDS TO HAVE A BELT FIRST B4 FIGHTING PAQUIAO!

Pacman is a better fighter than floyd. That’s for sure, if this 2 guys will have to fight it will be a sensational battle in the ring, but floyd won’t make it, pacman can easily knock him down. i’ll bet.

Manny does not need floyd anymore. He got nothing on manny pacquiao who makes more money on endorsement than what floyd can make on the ring unless he fights pacquiao. Manny should get 80% and Floyd 20%.

“Who’s the bigger draw, Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao? If the official numbers are indication in Las Vegas, it’s the Filipino.
The gate from last weekend’s showdown between Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto— which will air on HBO Saturday (10 p.m. ET/PT) — was $8.84 million with 15,470 tickets sold.

That’s 3,500 more tickets sold and $2 million more than what Mayweather’s comeback from a near two-year layoff drew when he fought Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in September on Mexican independence weekend.

No tickets were sold beneath face value for Pacquiao-Cotto. For Mayweather’s bout, 94 tickets were sold at 50% discount and 895 were comps, or giveaways while just 46 comps were doled out for Pacquiao-Cotto.” -By J. Michael Falgoust,, USA TODAY(tahts from the ticket sale numbers alone)

It is very obvious and cyrstal clear that egoistic, conceited and self proclaimed best in boxing rhino-faced PBF does not want to fight Pacman. His proposal of a bigger purse of the fight is a clear manifestation of running away. He is a moron and stupid fool believing that he can outwit civilized people..

Who is in the right mind to take his beat? The elephant faced dad and jr shoud go together in the boonducks..

We all know that Gayweather is a fraud, even Stevie Wonder can see that. How can he claim to be P4P King if he kept ducking the best in his division. Yes he fought Hatton a 140 pounder but Ricky has to go up 147 to fight him and so is Marquez from 135 to 144. Now watch as Mayweather will price himself out of fighting Pacquiao coz he knows what Manny can do to his ugly face. I don’t understand why there are people who still say that Mayweather is the best when he hasn’t fought the best fighters who are really the best.

Let us be clear, pacquiao never usurped the pound for pound title from mayweather. He earned it through his skills and blood and he showed it in the ring. When pacquiao and mayweather will clash, pacquiao team must see to it that the judges who will judge them must be of incredible integrity and cannot be corrupted. Otherwise, floyd mayweather will be smiling again after the fight. Who wants to see another fraud like mayweather vs castillo or dela hoya vs mayweather?mayweather is a very smart and intelligent kid and he knows how he can circumvent the system. He knows he can last 12 rounds against any fighter including pacquiao. Ergo, if the judges are on his side he can pull an upset everytime. This scenario has elluded the boxing world. It is more real than mayweather’s sr claim of steroids use for pacquiao. If you expect to earn $12 million dollars, what is $3m?Mayweather will handpick opponents afterward whom he can beat and earn again the lost $3 million. Easy as that.

The reason these “writers”,”boxing analysts”and so called fight fans dislike or dont rate Pacquiao is because from the beginning they didnt believe he would beat Morales,he proved them wrong. He beat Barrera, again when not many gave him a chance. At a time when Barrera was P4P.He beat Marquez twice, all the doubters could only support Marquez that he won.He fought Diaz, some saying Diaz is too big, strong,Pacquiao is a limited fighter. We know what happend. He then fought De La Hoya,to get the facts straight, it was De La Hoya who called out Pacquiao to fight. So many of these so called experts said Pacquiao would lose, get KO.That old fool Manny Stewart saying.Pacquiao has no defence, off balance etc etc etc.We know what happend.Pacquiao fought Hatton, again same thing.Pacquiao too small cant take a punch, limted fighter. We know what happend. Then Cotto, same thing. We know what happend. Now the fraud mayweather…I know what will happen.Ive backed Pacquiao everytime with money not just words.I’ll do it again. Those of you including this “writer”why dont you bet against Pacquiao?

Best Way to Demolish Floyd Gayweather

People are so much fascinated about May-Pac fight. I’ll play the devil’s advocate and ask why??? What does The Fraud bring to the table.
1) PPV attraction of Fraud is questionable per his recent boring and predictable fight with Marquez, a much smaller guy and a fighter who has not proven himself in the junior or welterweight division, there is no demographic study concluding that those who patronize this 1.0M PPV record came from white or black Americans..for all we know it might have been the latinos who provided a great majority of the PPV buys, I dare this meatball Schaefer and the biased Ross Greenburg to prove that it was Floyd’s pull that made those numbers by providing a demographic profile and statistical analysis of the facts.
2) He doesnt have a title but was only ridiculously placed at #2 by ring magazine after his bout with marquez which he even cheated in weight not satisfied with marquez’s unproven skills in the higher division and was predictably slow and sluggish at a bigger weight. Adding the fact that THe Fraud is under GBP which owns the Ring Mag which put into the question the integrity of Ring Mags decision
3) The Fraud has not fought a competitive fight, a fight which analysts would doubt the outcome, since his fight with Castillo, which is believed to have gone either way. Boxing fans know he had difficulty with dela hoya and it took 10 rounds for him to get rid of Fatton.
4) all is left is The Fraud’s big mouth and the eagerness of people to see The Fraud get beaten black and blue by somebody to put a stop to his ego trip and self-proclaimed status of greatness

Considering that, I dont think its good for people to wish him harm , despite his braggadocio and conceitedness.

The best way to punish the guy, since most if not all know that he is gutless to face a competitive fight is TO LET HIM SEEK HIS OWN LEVEL. LEt him fight, mediocre, over the hill, smaller boxers as he is wont to do to preserve is zero loss. That would punish him enough because that would show fans that he really is gutless and could not prove anything that comes from his mouth…That would be the simplest, humblest and Christian way in beating The Fraud. Christian Ethics dictate, “AGERE SEQUITUR ESSE”, that is ACTION FOLLOWS BEING. IF he is an authentic great fighter he would test his skills, if he is not then he would fight very prectable fights in his favor which would prove to the world he is only full of hot air.

Again i say, LET MONGOFLOYD SEEK HIS OWN LEVEL AND HERE ARE FIGHTS FOR HIM TO CONSIDER AS I PERCEIve his quality to be:
a) Floyd vs Hatton II
b) Floyd vs dela hoya III( The battle of Envious boxers)
c) Floyd vs Calderon
d) Floyd vs Darchinyan
e) Floyd vs Malinggago
f) Floyd vs any boxer in the women’s division
g) Floyd vs any unknown in the Pinweight division

With that, The Frauds career path materializes and will show to the world how great a boxer he is preserving his zero loss..and with his wins, Ring Magazine and Kevin Lole should put him as the no.1 proud4proud boxer and no.1 great of all times…That would put an exclamation mark at the end of his career…And maybe after this we could summon the mental hospital and take these guys, Floyd, Ring Mag, Kevin Lole, including Malinggago, Fraud Sr, Cintron, dela Hoya, Hatton and confine them in their lunatic cells and enjoy the company of their equal..although again, in latin, these guys are THE PRIMUS INTER PARES, which is, First among equals, that is inside the mental institution.

Why all the talk against Floyd? Pacman’s first priority should be to unify the welterweight belts. Who ever wins in the Mosley fight, that should be the next opponent for Manny. Let Floyd be the last fight, the retirement fight, the last hurrah, the last challenge before his retirement.

i thought the writer would atleast try to make sense to his title but he went as far back as mentioning boxing greats and great match up, yet still wasnt able to justify his article’s title. what a **** this article turned out to be.
pacquiao can retire at this very moment and years from now floyd wont be even mentioned along his name, floyd can retire now and he wont be missed. boxing would still be at the quagmire it is today.

they are not in the same level. pacquiao on top.

November 20, 2009 at 6:50 am

totally disagree, floyd was great at 130 -135lbs. only.. which elite fighter did floyd k.o.? Only Diego, others he won by “counterpunching”, opponents get tired of following him thus makes mistakes/opening. Pacman attack, creates openings. comparing resume, Manny simply fought the better quality opposition and won convincingly.. Floyd is a runner, boring and a cherry picker..He’s not an all-time great like Manny. to be even equal with the Pacmonster, floyd has to k.o. an elite 154lb. and 160lb. not happening, floyd’s too chicken..

PAC SONG TO FLOYD
They asked you if you’ll fight me
And you choked on your reply
I’d rather Arum deal with you
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you,
On what you say or do
The fans are now beginning
To see the real you..
And someday when we tats
My LEFT will be too much
That you have to close your eyes
Where do you hide?
I wanna pound you til you’re white
‘Til your face breaks down and cry
I wanna beat you
‘Til you dream and say, goodnight.
You think you are a strategist
That you can insult my pride
But through your insecurities
You’re ZERO loss seemed right
You’re just another fighter
So far from what is true
An overrated boxer
Who never gives his due

And someday when we tats
My RIGHT will be too much
That you have to close your eyes
Where do you hide?
I wanna pound you til you’re white
‘Til your face breaks down and cry
I wanna beat you
‘Til you dream and say, goodnight.

At times I’d like to break you
And drive you to your knees
The fans would like to watch you
And see your first defeat
Your huggers understand you
And we know how hard they try
I’ve watched your Dad protect you
And your Uncle loves to smile :biglaugh:

My coach thinks your a loser
Still searching for a break
You think your odds are better
But then the public bets AGAINST!

And someday when we tats
My SPEED will be too much
That you have to close your eyes
Where can you hide?
I wanna pound you til you’re white
‘Til your face breaks down and cry
I wanna beat you
‘Til you dream and say, goodnight!

how many legends and hall of famers did manny defeated? how many has floyd beaten? how many fighter did floyd ducked (mosley, cotto, margo) How many has manny ducked (cant think of any) what i know is manny is challenging fighters much bigger than him not much smaller as floyd did …simple mathematics

Floyd has a chance to surpass Manny’s achievement. Floyd now has 40-0 and Manny will beat him thrice it will become 40-3 (trilogy), so Floyd could break Manny’s 50-3 now.

jca

November 20, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Floyd need Manny to cement his legacy. However Manny does not need Floyd. All Manny has to do is fight Mosley and perhaps Margarito and beat them. Floyd has always run away from the most important boxers in the welterweight division (Mosley, Margarito, and Cotto). So if Manny fights the last two welterweights and if Floyd does not fight Manny, he has to fight these 3 boxers to compete with Manny’s achievements. Floyd’s dilema is really Manny. Without Manny in the picture, Floyd could pick his fight and secure his legacy today right away. But now since Manny is in the equation, he has the most difficult task of levelling with Manny achievements. So Floyd needs Manny more than Manny needs Floyd.
