Loyiso Mtya, acting CEO of BSA

Loyiso Mtya, acting CEO of the almost-bankrupt Boxing South Africa (BSA), has said the problem is that they’re a non-profit organisation and therefore they don’t get enough money.

What nonsense. The fact is that they have failed to secure sponsorship – and being privatised won’t solve that problem.

What Mtya is pushing here is a plan to privatise BSA, currently a government agency. But boxing is a dangerous sport and it needs the backing of government to ensure that rules are followed.

Mind you, BSA are frequently breaking those same rules, which says much about the people running the organisation.

The fact is that BSA are over-staffed, and with a streamlined pay-roll could easily surive on the government grants they have.

This is one activity that must not be privatised; that will kill the sport in this country.

What a tragedy. I hope it will never happen to some Boxing Company.
