Silence Mabuza (left) was stopped by Yonnhy Perez in the final round of their eliminator in May

Yonnhy Perez, the man who beat Silence Mabuza in their IBF bantamweight title eliminator in South Africa earlier this year, lifted the world crown in Las Vegas this weekend.

He comfortably won on points, and he also dropped champion Joseph Agbeko, a New York-based Ghanaian, in the 10th round, although according to some reports he went down from a headbutt and not a legitimate punch.

Perez, who is now unbeaten in 20 bouts, fought a great fight against Mabuza in May, and although many local supporters thought the South African was leading, I thought Perez deserved to be ahead on points going into the final round. The Colombian didn’t leave it to the judges, however, and he stopped Mabuza after catching him with a crisp shot on the button.

Mabuza described it as a lucky punch, but the truth is that Mabuza had been getting hit all night long. That wasn’t luck, that was boxing!
