Cocaine should be sniffed at

The recent drug confessions of tennis star Andre Agassi and rugby hero Joost van der Westhuizen have been met by much shock and surprise – and I really don’t know why.

Do fans (and some sports stars) really think that sports star don’t do recreational drugs? All you have to do is look at the annual report of the SA Institute for Drug Free Sport to see how many guys are nailed for dagga in South Africa! I know boxers who smoke dope (and they have never tested positive, by the way).

Former world heavyweight champion Sonny Liston was found dead, apparently after taking a heroin overdose.

Some years ago there were rumours that some Springbok rugby players were snorting cocaine. One source of mine was a guy (not a player) who I know had a drug problem himself.

Sports stars are human and I believe many more than just Agassi and Joost do participate. But here’s the twist – that’s not the real problem in world sport. The festering sore of sport is performance-enhancing drugs.

What’s the difference?

Using recreational drugs is plain stupid; taking performance-enhancing drugs is cheating!

I believe it’s common as hell, just the odd one is caught out – modern sportspeople are after all just celebs, and drugs and fame seem to go together. Maybe its just a way to cope with all the attention.
